Hanging bikes in garage

I currently have 9 bikes in our garage. Its getting well choca with the lawn mower, workmate, tins of paint etc..

At the moment they are all stacked in a pile leaning against each other at one end which makes it a nightmare getting the bike at the end of the stack out.

Been looking at hanging off the walls with these:
Halfords bike hook

And from the rafters by some of these:
Halfords hanger
or these:
Longer Halfords hook

Couple of questions:
1. Anyone used any of these and do they work?
2. If i want to hang from the rafters does that mean turning the bike upside down and hanging by the wheels or will the longer hook mean the bars and saddle will clear the ceiling?
3. Pressumably if your wheel base is differnet lengths the fixed hook hangers will only work for that one bike?
4. Will the hooks over the rafters just keep falling off and annoy me?
5. Got any other ideas (home made efforts etc.)

Any pics of your garages for inspiration would be great.

I just use an old scaffold pole through the joists & hang them by the saddle from it

i've got our bikes hanging by the rear wheels using the middle hooks, works fine unless you have deep rims or a huge tyre, normal sizes e.g. 2.1/2.35 fit ok.

I've got 6 bikes hanging on some hooks similar to this:

Halfords hook

That includes a road bike with a very expensive wheelset and my Commencal. No harm to the bikes and they're very secure.

I looked at hanging the bikes vertically but decided against it as they intruded into the garage space too much and I have shelves opposite that would have meant that there was very little usable space avaiable within the garage. Hanging them horizontally worked better for my situation as two bikes take up only slightly more room than one and on a full height wall you can hang one pair of bikes low and another above them.

I bought five Wilikinsons 79p rubber coated tool hooks and stuck them in the wall, I can hang a bike from each by the front wheel, Job done.

I've also added strips of batening further donw the wall to slot the rear wheel into, but this was not a necesity.

Got 7 bikes hanging off these from Decathlon

Will take big tyres and deep rims

I put up some in my garage over Easter I used a mixture of:
Hook which are OK for lighter bikes but when put into the wall the sag a little.
Hanger This is nice and sturdy but getting a larger tyred wheel in and out can be tricky. The trick is to hold the wheel whilst doing it.

Gonefishin- I am very tight on space too. But not enough wall space to hang them the right way up (9 bikes). I think thats what you meant?

Have tried to plan it out..

5 on the walls, 2 off the joists, and two on the floor.

Old wives tale alert:
I thought that storing bikes with hydraulic brakes upside down allowed air, normally above the reservoir, into the brake tubing. Have my bikes on the wall upright as a result, when obviously they would fit in better alternating up/down. Any one know if this is true? Noticed any problems flatfish?

Dont panic. I designed and drew out the house already and just dropped some bikes and boxes in it.

Not too bothered about oil/air in the brakes. Been left upside down for weeks now and not noticed anything.

Whats peoples thoughts on hanging by the rear wheel?
I ask because this is how I hang my blur LT and I wonder if the load on the rear shock is harming it.

How high is the ceiling? I've got a couple of pulleys that let me get bikes up in the air above workbenches etc.

I use a combination for fixed hooks in rafters and these:

Storing them level/near level as these do means they only come out from the wall as wide as the bars are, but they use alot of wall space.

The fixed hooks in my rafters are generally more versatile for storage, but do take more space. They double as a handy alternative to a workstand, depending on which way you hang the bike. These days I probably use the hooks more than I use the workstand.

Brain flex - riding your bike delivers far,far greater forces and stress to your shock than hanging it from the rear wheel - don't worry about it.

That's exactly what I did only I have put them up and I now have less space the bikes are harder to get down and its cheesing me off. I am taking next week off from work and I plan on sorting the garage out.

I use these as they have a big metal loop to lock the bike to. The drawback is they are expensive and you could probably do the same job with a decathlon hanger and some carefully spaced floor anchors mounted to the wall; if bike security is wanted too. (I am now wondering "why didn't I do that").

New garage being built at prestn with 5 bikes ot go in. I hav decided to go for woodne doors that open int eh traditional way which means i can always have one closed freeing up more storage spce behind it. I was planning on having 4 hooks on teh walls 2 mountain 2 road bikesstagering the heighs slightly of the hooks so that bars don't interfere whith each other. Have one bike down a i coomute most days on it. I will prob build alittle loft in the garage as there is quite a lot of height due to the slope of the land i sbuild on relaltive to the house. and fix a bar bewtween the joists i put in to hang the kids bikes on . I also have to try and fit a sailing dinghy inot he roof as well. I can see it taking as long to sort out stroage as its taken the builders ot buid it

I assume you are referring to the aggressively priced Saris hanger?

Fortunately I picked them up much, much cheaper from someone who worked for a barriers/cycle rack/security products distributor. As I was after a way of hanging the bikes and locking them to something solid the cost was only a little more than 3 x Decathlon hangers and 2 x ground anchors.

My garage is thin and longish so didnt want bikes sticking out as they woudl if verttical.I've got 2 'Halfords Folding Bike Storage Wall Bracket' high up on the one wall with 2/3 bikes underneath.

take 2 bikes + 2 frames or three bikes with f wheels off

got it on the wall high enough to put others underneath it.

I use the Halfords type hooks which screw into joists for six bikes, as noted above you can get cheaper equivalents if you look around on ebay etc.
