  • Gym routine for a numpty?

    I’m a member of a gym but now I’d like to progress by actually going.

    On the couple of times I have been I find myself looking round not really knowing what to do.

    I don’t want to get a trainer, yet, as I can’t really afford it.

    So after ideas for a 60 minute workout that’ll help me get stronger, athletic stronger not bodybuilder stronger. Anything simple for me to start with?

    Squats deadlifts bench press military press.not all in one workout.

    Prepare to hurt but in 24 weeks you’ll be an Adonis* ( the god of sexy, I think )

    *Provided you eat right and get plenty of sleep

    Does your Gym have a TRX? If so watch some youtube vids. Great way to get stronger and improve your core at the same time.

    Just ignore your ego and lift light until your technique is sound. Film yourself and compare to clips/stills of competent lifters – or have a session with a PT who specialises in lifting – to check you’re on the right track.

    Point is, there are a lot of videos where you can see what the correct technique is for dead lifts, squats, bench press, etc, because getting technique right from the start is very important.

    Feel better now hun, or do you need someone to hold your hair whilst you’re sick ?

    5×5 as others have said, but don’t underestimate how important good form is.

    Maybe worth getting a PT session or 2 to ensure your form is on the money from the start. If you can nail the form on the 3 big lifts, everything else you should be able to teach / manage yourself.

    I’m also on 5×5. It only takes an hour thrice weekly. Within a few months you’ll be strong like bull, and it’s a real functional strength that’ll carry over into every other part of life, such as work or biking.

    Well recommended, properly simple to follow, and the free app is excellent.

    Definitely. There’s plenty of videos showing you how to lift, but nothing beats having a trainer highlight the muscular cues and feeling the right way to lift.

    I quite like the app “Freeletics”
    Its 99% based on HIIT body-weight exercises that you can do anywhere (including in the gym)
    The app has good videos showing correct form and bases the workouts around timing how long you take to complete a set and comparing it to previous times. Ie do it as fast as you can with good form.

    Good for ‘functional fitness’ and balance etc which can’t hurt out on the bike.
