    Need some for little bambino but the shops round here (in the sticks) are clean out of it!
    What is similar? Parmesan?

    not actually like any more easily available cheeses. softer than parmesan, more nutty rich flavour than emmenthal, more subtle than a strong cheddar. President emmenthal is possibly the closest that I've found in this country but that is still lacking in flavour

    Another vote for Emmental. Also the Co-op also sells Leerdammer, which is fairly simular.

    I think it's well cool that your kid likes Gruyere btw ……. rather than Dairylea/processed shite 8)

    The french version, which also used to be called gruyere, is now called Beaufort, seen it in some shops but less often than Gruyere

    maasdam is close but emmentaal is also close
