Sorry if this a dumb question. What GPS navigation device for mapping rides and guiding me round unknown areas and trails?

I’ve the direction sense of a dead homing pigeon, I know exploring is part of the fun, but when I ride round a forest all day and miss all of the good bits it’s rather frustrating. Don’t really need heart rate and calories, etc. Just a off road “sat nav” with the ability to record where I’ve been for future reference.

    Thanks.

I’ve got a SatMap, but these days for shorter stuff I use my iPhone with the OSGetamap App (chews batteries and a bit flaky)

Garmin Extrex 30 £145 from Burows. Opensource mapping free. I can read a map, but given the cost of a good cycle computer it was a no brainer for me. Only issue is I bought a cheap bar mount so tend to hold it in place with a little tape on rough rides.

Does the etrex cover the same bases as the edge computers?

    Speed, distance, ascent/descent, HRM?

Also what’s the open source mapping like?
