    …….do you recomend?

Got a family, would ideally like an estate, been looking at focus, passat, Octivia, vauxhall but having no idea about cars I would like a little bit of help.

Also we have caravan so something that handle pulling it.

    Many thanks

Estates cost more second hand, generally. I found Passat saloons to be pretty cheap for what they are, cos everyone thinks rep car and doesn’t want them.

Ours is good for towing, can manage a decent sized van. I think though that after a certain age they increase the noseweight rating form 75 to 85kg which helps, but I am not sure when that happens.

The smaller class of car (Octavia, Focus) will only be able to tow a small van. Check though – my dad has a 11 plate 1.6 petrol Focus which has a low gross train weight, so much so that a full laden car can only tow about 1100kg I think.

How heavy is your caravan ?
Ford S-Max is nice, but at that budget your looking at high milers, likewise newer shape Mondeo. Both will tow a big caravan though. Newer shape Passat is a nice one, but again mileages will be getting on a bit. We have a Galaxy. At 1780kg it tows our 1500kg caravan without any problems, but downside is the 35mpg. For a family though they really are great. Seats in/out, bikes in/out etc. The older shape Mondeo is a great tow car, we towed ours at 95% quite happily. If you can find a nice one that would be good but values obviously falling rapidly as the newer ones come onto the market.
I’d happily go for another Galaxy though.

I’ve got a Honda FRV which I’ve now had for almost 6 years. I’ve never had a car this long before. Best family car I’ve ever had. Not an estate but there is bags of room in it, certainly more than the BMW 5 series I had before it and it’s better built too. Loads around now at the price you’re after.

I allways fancied a Rover 75. They will all be high milage now but if you can find a good one with the 2L (bmw) engine.
