  • Good VW diesel specialist down south? Smelly T5

I became a sheep and got a T5 Kombi which has a problem of exhaust fumes entering the cab via the air vents when the fan is on, not good. Googling seems to show a few possibilities for the cause e.g. duff exhaust manifold, EGR valve or DPF so I’d like to find someone with the expertise to narrow it down and fix properly. Any recommended independent VW specialist garages in the south, preferably in Dorset/Hampshire? Cheers

There’s a vw specialist in Eastleigh where I enquired about some work on my t5, never had it done but was impressed with their attitude. They’re always busy with plenty of t4’s and t5’s outside.

    I’d agree with this.
I just had some work done by Terry recently and was really happy with the job he did.

Could also be the turbo gasket leaking blowing oil on to the exhaust. But more likely the manifold, the gaskets on mine need replacing

Yep I had the turbo gaskets replaced a couple of months back by local garage but still get the smell. Nice blokes at local garage but this time I want to find someone who specialises in just these to make sure it gets resolved, cheers

May be a bit far away but SJB Autotech in Basingstoke have always helped me out in the past…

Seconded for SJB in Basingrad, if it’s not too much of a trek.

Update – just got van back from the VW specialist for inspection. Verdict is the manifold area: missing studs, loads of soot. They won’t know if the manifold is salvageable until off, might have warped and popped the studs. If it does need replacing, they are quoting £500 for the manifold, various gaskets, clamps, seals and £500 labour + VAT = £1200. EEEK…does that sound about right? Worth a second opinion elsewhere or bite the bullet?

Don’t want to worry you but when some manifold studs on my saab went they had to take the head off to electrically erode the broken studs out of the head as they has snapped flush and are too hard to drill. It was quite expensive, even with the manifold being salvageable.

    I’m downsizing!!
Get it over to the guy Mattbee suggested – it’s where the Caddy would be going next time if it wasn’t for sale.

If you have a 5cylinder 2.5 T5 the price is spot on unfortunately, the branches of the manifold are known to crack.

If there’s studs missing that would suggest the manifold has been removed (or attempted to) at some point previously.
