Dunno but see if you can get a place that has Bakewell Tart for dessert. I reckon a homemade Bakewell Tart from Bakewell would be pretty tasty (a)Its my fave, (b) I'm hungry right now..

I ate in the Bulls Head Inn in Monyash a couple of weeks ago. The fish medley was epic and the Wincle Waller ale very good. The bar area was very busy but they were happy for three of us in walking gear to go into the restuaruant which is very nice.
The previously mentioned Monsal Head Hotel had a different Wincle Rambler on tap - lovely stuff.
A bit further away is the Royal Oak at Hurdlow - that's very good as well. Big portions and good beer.

When we stayed in Bakewell in Feb 2009 we went to The Peacock (adjacent to Co-op car park - Google Streetview link) for tea and it was very good. So much so we went back a few nights later! "Just" pub grub, nothing outlandish, but seemed very well done.

Bakewell Tart
Bakewell Pudding, I think you'll find. Completely unlike the Mr Kipling nonsense.
At least one of the two "original" bakewell pudding shops has a restaurant that does pub food type stuff, followed obviously by a bakewell pudding for pudding. Not sure about other pubs in the town itself, but second the recommendation of Monsal Head up the road - worth it for the view, plus last time I was there was a decent beer on.

Ahh STW pedantry, love it. I think you'll find that there is some controversy over the pudding/tart, read the wikipedia link. It's not just Kipling I'm afraid, Beeton also thought it was a tart. More importantly, I don't give a f*ck what it was called, I'll call it a bakewell tart if I want to.

I haven't been to the Bear for a few years now, but i can confirm it was absolutely awesome when i worked there

Then you'll get some spongey, almondy, jammy slice. It's a pudding. Go to the one on the main street, as that's the original. My missus used to work there when she first moved to the area.
+1 for the Bear, but it's a half hour drive from Bakewell.
+1 for Monsal Head too - 5 mins from Bakewell. Nothing outstanding, but decent enough - it's worth it for the view - and you can nearly see Roflharris's house, or whatever Rob's called at the moment. You could always pop down and offer him a tenner for his Prophet
The Grouse & Claret is ok at Rowsley - pub grub, but a bit classier than your standard Brewers Fare etc.

have your sunday lunch in the Ashford Arms in Ashford in the water, Just down the A6 from Bakewell. THE most fantastic roast dinner IN THE WORLD.
In Bakewell the Peacock is good and the one near the river at the end of the one way street. I think its called The Castle.Posted 2 years ago # -

I'm pretty sure thats the one I like and want!!!!Posted 2 years ago # -
monsall head +1
of course, the real fine cuisine in bakewell is a double cheese burger from the Bakewell Pudding shop.
MAHOOSIVE they are, and the monumental amount of cheap catering grade cheese forms the stretchiest substance known to man.
the only problem may be that it's changed since i was at school there 13 years ago. Even if it hasn't i bet they don;t cost £1.15 any more

went the Peacock for a quick post ride drink the other week
£3.60 for a blackcurrant and Lemonade!?!?!
£3.30 for a Lager Shandy (cheap lager mind nothing fancy)!!!Couldnt f***ing believe it, its Bakewell not London for Christs sake!
Barmaid was quite grumpy too, especially when I asked for a reciept as I assumed she had made a mistakeIf thats the price of drinks no way you will catch me in there again
(Food that was being brought out for other people looked to be decidedly average pub food in my opinion)Posted 2 years ago # -
Bakewell is expensive, it's a very popular tourist destination and retirement town.

This seems to be normal for Derbyshire IME... bloody townies coming out at weekends and spending money in their villages...

• Buy Fish and Chips
• Sit next to river
• East some chips and feed rest to ducksIts the only way to eat in Bakewell!

I don't appreciate having my wallet raped and Im sure tourists and old folk (of which I am neither) don't eitherPosted 2 years ago # -

Is the correct answer - I started riding over to do that with my mates on our Townsends and Universals 20 years ago, still doing it today. The trout in the river like chips as well

A Bakewell tart...

A Bakewell pudding...
Pudding > tart x 10

A pint of Carling in my local 'old mans' pub between Bakewell & Matlock is £2.95 which is the norm for the area. Bakewell is going to be more expensive as it's a tourist town.
A 3 bed detatched around me will average £200k-£250k - expect to pay 50% more in Bakewell.
I recently paid £3.40 for a Carling whilst working in Taunton (Somerset) - now that is taking the piss.
