  • 'Go Outdoors' outdoor stores – worth a visit? (15% discount this w/e)

They are offering 15% off everything tomorrow and Sunday. Am bound to be the only person who hasn't visited one but are they worth a look? Seem to do a good range including some quality brands.

As always, comments are welcome. 🙂

Some stuff is very keenly priced, some stuff isn't so keenly priced. Overall, they're pretty good, but aimed mainly towards walking, camping, climbing and backpacking. If I were looking for cycling gear, Decathlon is my go to place.

Not bad. Nowhere near as good as decathlon but they have some good branded stuff

Nowhere near as good as decathlon

depends what you want really… as ever, they are good for some stuff, not so good for others. some of their bulk/end of line buy-ins can be really cheap. And i don't fit in a lot of decathlon's clothing, whereas I have more brands and fits to choose from in go outdoors.

you need one of their discount cards which cost 4 quid a year, but you can buy that at the till with your stuff… You get at least 10% off everything with that anyway, so if the 15% off is additional to that, then great, if not, it's not such a bargain.

Good knowledgeable staff (at least in the Sheffield one) who are actually interested in what they sell. (slightly biased in that I used to work there 🙂 )

The two places have very different business models. Decathlon has a consistent range and good pricing. You hardly ever see a sale except for when they're clearing out kit at the end of a season.

Go Outdoors / CCC operate a huge number of short term promotions – literally, an astonishing number. You can pick up some absolute bargains, but the range varies much more, and pricing alters from week to week. Because of this, you need to have a good knowledge of what stuff should cost, and cost in the past, to know if you're getting a bargain or not.

That said Go Outdoors have some consistently cheap stuff – it's the only place to buy walking trousers for example.

    Thanks for the replies. 🙂

Not actually looking for cycle-specific stuff, more interested in wicking outdoor-branded tops as per my recent thread concerning rubbish non-wicking cycle-specific ones.

There does appear to be some good deals so may well pay a visit.

Might be worth looking for winter gear before the prices hike up. Pun intended.

One has just recently opened in Southampton and some of their opening deals were stupid cheap. Worth getting one of their discount cards for £4 so you get all the deals.

If there is something specific you are after I can wander down and check out the prices for you C_G as I need to go there later anyway.

They do have lots of stuff, some of it bargain, some not.

They can have problems with not having the size you need too.

    Good shop though overall.

i used to work for them when I was a student in Sheffield, they had two shops then, now they have over 20, their rate of growth at the moment is simply unbelievable!

Definitely do your homework before your visit if you are intending to spend significant money!

Don't forget, if it's your first visit, you have to buy a £4 annual discount card to qualify for the advertised prices.

I like looking around their stores to see the huge range of products. Unlike Decathlon, they stock well known brands from the the cheapest to some of the most expensive.

I've noticed this season, that there have been pretty steep price increases in some of the expensive items I have been considering, but a lot of the budget products have remained about the same.

What i don't like is the continual short promotions which frequenly fall on dates when I can't get there and the fluid pricing makes it difficult to track what is going on with prices.

BBB – thanks for offer but am really curious about this shop!

Sounds as though it's hit and miss for bargains but, fear not, I do not get carried away only on purchasing bikes/bike bits.

    Like Tron said.

If you want to get specialist kit, like for instance an MSR Titan kettle, there are cheaper places to buy – The Go Outdoors discount card price is typically the same that many other shops sell for at standard price (Outside, Cotswold)for low turnover kit, whereas Hi-gear tents are always cheap. Every now and then you will get a real bargain at Go Outdoors, especially Rab, however I've noticed more and more they're catering towards the bargain basement / beginner camping market.

Our local one looks like a bargain bin place, but has some real bargains stashed away amongst the Peter Storm and Regatta 🙂 I brought an ice-breaker tshirt for half price (reduced from 'WTF?' to 'hmm') which is a brilliant thing to wear, I just want to hug it all day 🙂

Yes, the Ice Breaker stuff caught my eye!

Hi CG – yeah, it's worth a trip as already said there are some very good deals to be had. If you're headed to the Basingstoke one the bike stuff isn't great – bit of Polaris gear and that's your lot pretty much – I've also tried to get Icebreaker stuff there myself before and they never seem to have much on the shelves, but still worth a trip – nearly always some good deals on Rab, Montane and TNF stuff.

You may need to buy one of the discount cards to get the sale prices though… But you'll almost certainly save the cost of that in the first purchase!

Thanks CG, off there tomorrow for a gander and possibly get a Montane Smock £29.99 – 15% 8)
You can save a fair few quid on the GPS stuff if the 15% 'does' actually cover everything
