Sunday afternoon, bit bored, bike ride I think. MTB? No, can’t be bothered to load the car up and I’m not doing 30 mins on the road to get to the trails. Road bike? Maybe, but not sure I fancy it. Now if I could combine to 2…

30 miles, mix of towpaths, gravel, bridleways and roads linking them up. Evening sunshine, people out and about, absolutely cracking. As a by-product, I’ve also finally found out what my Kaffenback is best for, pootling along looking at the countryside and not worrying about how fast I’m going. It was glorious. And next time, I’m going to find a pub to go via.

Anyway, no reason for the post other than to share about a lovely bike ride.

Yeah, can’t wait til it’s all dried up so I can gnarmac it to work and back.

    Congratulations,

You have discovered “touring”. On a “touring” bike.

I thought we’d decided it was Enduroad or is that different again?

Gnarmac; it’s like touring but without panniers.

(and it’s basically what we used to call ‘mountain biking’ before you needed 160mm of enduro-specific travel. Almost like a re-boot)

if you have a beard and a carradice bag does it become Gnaurdax ???

I thought touring involved…you know, touring, like multi day andventures, living out of a bivi bag and carrying a weeks worth of clothes and food with you.

And don’t touring bikes normally weigh as much as a downhill bike? (without panniers)

personally I think I’ll stick with calling it CX, single day/afternoon rides, light-ish bike, occasional aspirations of speed and most importantly it’s only 2 letters to type 🙂

<edit> but I do like miketuallys suggestion

    Gnarration. Or possibly just gnarcissism.

Does riding a 30 mile loop from your house really count as touring? That might actually be more ridiculous than gnarmac or enduroad or cycloXXX

    gnarcissism

Posting multiple pics of your gnarmac bike?

Do we have a correct term for the bikes? After all, my big bike is a gnarpoon so there must be a similar term.

I’m sure there used to be a term for a bike that combined off- and on- road capabilities..?

Ah, yes! It’s a hybrid. A Gnarmac bike is just a sexy Raleigh Pioneer 🙂

Freeroading was coined by Specialized, IIRC. There were using it in 2009 to describe their Tricross.

They seem to use “Adventure Cross” now, for their AWOL bike. (Which is an awesome bike, and would probably be my “just one bike” choice.)

The AWOL is a great bike, I’m loving mine as my new ‘going for a bike ride’ bike but I’m getting very close to attacking the frame with a file to get rid of the bit where it says “Adventure WithOut Limits”

FFS, it’s cringeworthy, what were they thinking!

CX for people who want to ride road bikes off road but aren’t fast enough for a CX bike.

CX for people who aren’t grumpy enough to make sarky comments on other abilities 😉

Besides I thought that teh CXers would be happy given how much they hate CX rides being called that since CX IS ONLY RACING OK!!!!!!!

tsk. Who’s going to buy a bike that’s just for riding. It needs to be for a specific niche that you can identify with and validate your lifestyle choices!

I have my [brand] newly built Salsa Vaya right up alongside my 1992 Fire Mountain, and scarily the frames look very *very* similar. Funny how it goes eh?
