hi i had a walk down the volunteer section last time i was there and apart from a few corners being cut buy idiots it all looks to be holding up very well, pity the same cant be said for some of the contractor sections

Martin's not there on Sunday, off kayaking I think
Doh, of course he is. I was paying attention on Friday, honest...
Agree that a bit of maintenance on the contractor-built bits wouldn't go amiss - as I've said before, I'd be available pretty much any time.

Hi Terry
Scott pointed out where you'd piled some rocks at the start to discourage off piste riding. Paul said people were bypassing the rocky steps at the end of our section as well, dragging loads of mud back onto the trail at the bottom. Doesn't sound like we have to much fettling to do on our section, maybe we can help stabilise some of the other bits. I really don't want it to get the reputation of being rubbish for want of a bit of maintenance.

Hi guys,
Yes, I had a quick look on Friday (whilst driving back towards the gate) at the stone pitched staircase. Quite a few people have ridden down to the left of the staircase, making a bit of a mess and dragging lots of earth and loose material back onto the armoured surface. I dragged up and placed a few large obstructions, but then had to run back to the car so that Jon didn't lock me in.
I'm up for some maintenance days, alot of people only want to build new stuff, but I have a bit of a perfection disorder, like jon
, so I want everything that is already there to be perfect.Paul

So, that's three of us then...

"stone-pitched staircase"
Is that the steep little rocky drop off section in the woods near the beginning of the route?
If so i did notice a lot of tyre tracks to the left of it. I had to stop at that section to prevent my newbie g/f from hitting it, so i ended up walking around it.
Hopefully i'll be back soon and i can ride it this time!Posted 2 years ago # -

It's this bit...
Must admit I'll be intrigued to see just where people have ridden - when we were building it, I got the impression that if you went off it to the left, you'd be away down the slope and into a tree!

Don't know what Paul means, I just wanted all the planks on the bridge to be exactly the same length.....
Tony, I've seen your crazing paving trail abse layers, you'd be hard pushed to a get a knife between some of the stones.

Guilty as charged.
BTW, I agree with you about the length of the planks on the bridge...

Maybe on Sunday someone could consult with Martin as to what measures he's happy for us to take to prevent people cutting corners and riding off piste. At Dalby I've seen secured logs put in place to keep people on the trail, but I'm not sure if Martin would want that on H&S grounds. In some cases, I'd say to armour those lines of least resistance that people are taking. In other cases, I'd say put some secured logs in the way to prevent people riding that line. On the stone pitched staircase, I'd like to put some permanent obstruction in the way, so people have to ride or walk down the staircase. However, there's no point in us putting bear traps in, if Martin then says they have to be removed.

Martin's apparently away playing boats somewhere this weekend, but Nigel might have some thoughts on the matter. Whatever, the sooner we can get a solution in place the better methinks.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Nigel will probably go for sharpened stakes
Agree with Paul though, I think it'll be case by case, some will need the desire line formalising, some will want the mantraps. Secured logs or really big stones are probably the safest bet although now we're a bit more aware we should try and use the ground conditions to coerce people to use the correct line where possible.

im up for a bit of maintenance if needs be , as for people riding on the left side of the staircase they must be mad its got to be far slipper than riding the staircase itself , perhaps we should provide a nice smooth tarmacked optional line , i think a few rocks or piles of logs should be enough in most places
Posted 2 years ago # -
The staircase is a much easier line than than the slithery mud hustle that the cheaters are taking. We'll own that on Saturday

Terry, although you've typed that with a
, I'm sure, and the staircase was 'dumbed down' from our original desired black grade, so we didn't have to add an alternative trail. I'm starting to think that anything with the slightest challenging surface, will need an alternative smooth line. This is why I've recently been questioning anything on the new section that isn't dead easy, that doesn't have an alternative easy line. Too many people just ride around stuff that remotely challenges their front wheel. I don't understand it, but unfortunately we have to accept that these people come and ride the trails (or rather, around them) and we have to build with them in mind, or they just make a mess of it all. Otherwise, we spend more time on maintenance rather than new build, and we'll eternally hate them for it.

I still think there is a halfway house here. I want the trails to be accessible to most but I don't want them to be rideable by everybody. There may be bits where the desire lines need to be surfaced, other bits need to be 'fenced' so you can't ride around them. What's wrong with people having to walk the odd section, it's what I do when I bottle something. The little bridges we're putting in at the moment, hop off if you're not happy. Thing is if we bypass every obstacle then there's no incentive for people to get better. I'd rather be forced to either try an obstacle or walk it rather than have an easy option of always being able to ride around it.
I think the staircase is a good example. I can just about ride it (not always fully in control, Ed may be able to sort that
), many can't or won't, lets just make sure you can't go around if you don't ride it, it's fine to walk down, even with a full wheelbarrow as many of us can attest.

all good points guys , as for the new section don't forget there is a nice smooth wide fire road not 10 yards to the right for all those that don't fancy the trail that we are building , perhaps we should put a escape trail to the fire road near the big log so those that have decided to have a look can easily chicken out of the rest

I walked it Jon. I promise next time to bite the bullet and go for it.

Guys i just want to say i was over there a few weeks ago and it was rather wet but it was still an absolute blast!! Keep up the good work and i will be back for more soon

I walked it Jon.
Me too, and I helped build the darn thing...
I promise next time to bite the bullet and go for it.
Hopefully after our day with Ed-O next weekend, I'll be able to say the same thing!

tony if ed stands at the bottom you will be able to fall into his beard for a soft landing

The stairs aren't difficult really, it's no steeper than say Walnar Scar in the lakes it's just narrower that's all. As long as you have a clear line in and out of a "feature" most will have no problems. It is a red trail after all so should be in places hard yet not all the time. As for those who cut bits out it's down to us to guild them in the right way. As Jon says using fences etc, can work but if the trail just doesn't "flow" then maybe armour those places. Also worth noting is that Gisburn attracts a high number of families with children as well as those new to riding who may not be aware of how demanding a trail will be until they're on it. This is in my opinion, the reason why there is in place lots of short cuts taken.

Taught a guy how to ride the staircase today. That whole section is good for coaching on and it's sheltered.
Ideally you should be pumping it for speed to hit the berm! We'll concentrate on riding it smoothly first though chaps

Yes, agreed.
Although, the bridges are naturally fenced, otherwise you end up in the ditch. But other obsticals and lines will need fencing in if we don't want a feature lost within a sea of muddy tracks. I rode the Hamsterly black route a few years ago and felt really sorry for the trail builders there, every section they built had almost been completely lost within a massive sea of muddy tyre tracks going off in all directions around the feature.Ideally you should be pumping it for speed to hit the berm!
Knacker, our head of trail design at Stainburn always talks about riding certain obsticals pump track style, it's the future!.

You should be doing WHAT to do WHAT to the WHAT!!!
OK then...
Seriously, I'm really looking forward to it.

hi nice to see the dig days making front page news , we got a lot done tweaking the section before the bridge on Sunday (although i think those new berms are a bit on the large size) so now we can crack on with the new section again , also a massive thanks to the single traction guys for all the extra help on Sunday

Second that. More dig days next week carrying on with the tree ride section, we now have two trees end to end. Anyone fancy helping judt drop me an email.
