It's the biggest and brightest full moon in 20 years this weekend.
By complete chance I accidently bought a big old russian 1000mm mirror lens earlier in the week.
Just in case it's cloudy tomorrow, here's one from tonight...
I did try some shots with a 2x teleconverter but couldn't actually fit the whole moon in. 
Well captured, but it's still just the moon unfortunately 
Maybe you should fit the 2x and then wait for it to be further away...
I suppose I could have backed up a bit.
It's not that detailed - I can't see any Clangers at all...

Anyway you don't have to take the whole moon - details are great. Get the 2x on and zoom in like you won't be able to for another 20 years.

I wonder if I can use this as an excuse to persuade Mrs Grips that I can have a tripod. I want one of those angleable ones for macro work. Not sure if it'd work as normal tho...

Just out of interest what setting are people using to take these photos. I have never had any luck while taking photos of the moon or stars.

I stuck mine on A and iso800 and let the camera do the rest, which turned out to be 1/500 shutter speed which was around what I wanted for my wobbly tripod.
Lovely photo but it won't matter how much zoom the OP has he aint going to get a picture of a clangar. They don't live on the moon but in a little blue planet...

Its a lot easier if you remember you're photographing sunlight. so although the sky is dark the moon that you're taking the image of is reflecting daylight, I normally use around f11 and about 1/60 of a second and iso 100 ish or more normally auto iso on my Olympus E3.
Best thing for it is a tripod, a cheap ebay remote and a delayed shutter release to stop mirror shake.
Failing to do moonrise justice on Saddleworth. A great sunset was going on the other way. Didnt know which way to look. You'd never guess this is two stops under exposed, damn field camera.
I took a few moon pics when I got my 70-300mm - hand held. Here's one:
As you can see, not the sharpest image due to hand holding, but fairly satisfied with the level of zoom.

Isnt that just at the top level with the blokes elbow, perhaps if I did a bit of crop it would get it if a little fuzzy

I was out taking some pictures last night. It's amazing how fast the moon moves when zoomed in loads - using live view to focus properly you could actually watch it move across the screen. Spooky...

I normally use around f11
it's pointless stopping down to f11 to photograph the moon when you will be focused at infinity, you will not be getting the best out of the lens either.

Just got a good shot but think someone has left an old exposure light up there?
Going to give it a go with my 400mm prime, thinking ISO100, f/8 and something like 1/125, might up the shutter speed a bit though.
On my very stable albeit heavy old manfrotto 055CB tripod, spot metered, remote and mirror locked up then see how it goes.
My effort was a bit cheesy...
