quick one, i have jagwire cabling on my specialised camber comp carbon. just snapped my gear cable to the rear mech. question 1: do i replace all the cabling or just the inner. question 2: is this the best cabling system question 3: there is no question 3……

    thanks folks.

Best to do inner and outer at same time. Good quality shimano PTFE coated inner and their SP41 outer is usual best recommendation. Remember and replace the end ferrules as well.

SP41 if you are happy with black outer, though if the existing outer isn’t too old you should be fine with what you have

Jagwire works well too and you get a range of colours

thanks folks, not fussed about colours to be honest, but good direction if i was scotroutes. i struggle for a good local bike shop for specific stuff (though i use him where i can). any suggestions for a supplier (no problem with big web guys, but always happy to support the smaller guys)

Any bike shop will be able to supply a basic gear inner – they might have some better quality stuff too. Many (most) will have SP41 outer on the roll so you can buy it by the metre.

SP41 if you are happy with black outer

Come in other colours now, to cater for tasteless people

I’ve been meaning to ask this for a while now so I’ll hijack slightly… 🙂

I was gobsmacked when I finally went with full ptfe sp41 as shifting suddenly felt super accurate and like the well assembled and maintained machine I always wanted it to. Properly click-bam and no reason to doubt that what I asked for had happened, but without drama.

I’ve seen a couple of references to something even betterrer in M8000. Anyone any thoughts or experience?

I keep saying it, full length sp41 then 1.1mm inner. Most inners are 1.2mm. The thinner ones make shifting so light it’s a joy

If the outer is full length, is SP41 and the ends aren’t fraying, ferrules still firmly attached, then it’s probably still fine to use unless it’s quite old.

With an SP41, any generic stainless steel cable, job done.

p.s. good quality, slightly harder ferrules work a treat for preventing ends from fraying. The stock soft ones that come with kits I find split then the ends fray and snag when shifting, water gets in, rusts and new outer required.
