    That’s it, folks. Let’s be seeing the finest sporting photography you can find that sums up the word “win”.

    Obviously there’s this sort of thing

    But then I think this is a strong one too;

    But mainly for Roger Black getting silver. He knew he couldn’t beat Johnson, no one could, so for Black, his “win” was that silver medal.

    A few rowing ones

    Redgrave winning his 5th Gold at Sydney 2000

    but in some ways more impressive was the GB eight that won as they were far from the favourites and just went out there and took the win, especially if you know the stories behind it.

    Then the Pinsent 4-‘s win at Athens – again, a performance that was simply about refusing to lose and delving deeper into what was possible than most people ever could

    Redgrave and Pinsent’s win at Atlanta – against the backdrop of British failure, they were the only British gold medal winners and more than that, this was probably their most dominant win – they destroyed the opposition. The pic isn’t dramatic as such but I think it captures the pressure they were under to win and as such, winning only really provided relief at the fact that they didn’t lose rather than elation at the win.
