I noticed today that my cassette has a fair amount of up down play. It's done up nice and tight so it's not sliding in and out on the freehub body and can't be pushed in or done up tighter. It's around 2mm of movement at the largest ring maybe a bit more. Simply put you can wobble it.

I assumed that the freehub bearing is gone or could it be something more costly. It's a hope bulb.

It's engaging fine and works but something needs maintenance.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

have you removed the wheel from the bike and felt if it gets any worse without the skewer?

without feeling it who knows.. but worn bearings or a broken axle could be something to do with it. so hard to tell.

Have you removed the cassette – is the Hope free hub an aluminium one – is it badly gouged?

Cassette is new, freehub body is steel and in good shape and the hub works fine. I'm pretty sure it the freehub bearings but they must be utterly buggered to have that much play..
