Copter tape from Just Riding Along. Not cheap but has done a great job on my new Orange 5 after a week in the Alps last week. Loads of scuffs to the tape but nice shiny paint underneath!

easy to apply?

it goes on best with a little help from a hair dryer

Nah - get the foam pipe lagging from the plumbers merchants and pad that steed! Works a treat.

If proper helicopter tape is too expensive try Duck Window repair Tape
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Duck-Weather-Repair-Tape-50mmx25M/dp/B000TAQL72
It doesnt last as long but it only costs a fraction

I used ProGold tape - 2 full bike packs (£19.99 each), cut and fit them over a year ago to my 2009 TREKEX8. They are going slightly yellow (10%?) but the tape is thick and has saved the paintwork from numerous scratches and dings.
I'll probably peal it all off and reapply soon. I cut it to fit the top of the top tube, underside & sides of downtubes, rear swing arm, etc - and obviously where the cables move and rub the paint.
I suspect the yellowing has come from me rubbing her down with GT85 to make her shine...
No ugly patches.
A lot of effort to get all teh air bubbles out - and you'll need another pair of hands to help you when applying the long tricky bits.

Wow Steve P thats dedication I only have a couple of patches on the headtube and a patch on the left seatstay where my heel scuffs.
But my bikes are scratched to hell and need a respray so I reckon something in between is needed

Depends - do you have an ugly bike or not?

self amalgamating tape is good for the swing arm where u get chain slappage.

should have added i am not planning on covering the whole bike just the usual rub points and maybe the down tube.
But thanks for all the advice.

Trident racing for helicopter tape, cheap as chips, well it was when I bought it last time. Comes in various widths.

I bought some helicopter tape, applied some to the downtube of my Trance, stood back, and promptly peeled it back off.
Looked crap, which kind of defeats the object.
Just stuck a few patches on cable rub points and live with it.
