Are there any ethics to it? Say I want a bike almost exactly the same as a.another bike made by mr bike maker. Is it allowed to copy mr bike maker's geometry and sizing to get a frame made with a few bespoke 'tweaks'?

You've just described custom bike building

I don't think you can copyright an angle or a length.

I think you'll find that a 69deg head angle and 71deg seat angle has been patented by Mr Richards and he has been known to set his legal counsel on anyone who attempts to copy it. Be careful. Id recommend just tweaking it to 68.5deg to be on the safe side.

So, could I ask mr. bike maker for his geometry sheet and expect a reasonable response?

When Gary Fisher published his frame dimensions for the first time in about 1988/9 mountain bikes around the world suddenly got a lot better.

probably not, but 99% are published on their websites?
if not.........
70/71 deg seat angle
HA is 70 on an XC bike, knock 1deg off for each order of gnar(tm)
trail/marathon = 69
trail/all mountain = 68
all mountain/enduro = 67
freeride = 66
DH = 65BB height is somewhere between 11.5 (thats pretty low) and 13 (ellsworth specialist and trials bikes)
Chainstay length is 16.5 unless theres something daft in the way
top tube is down to personal preferance.

I own 89° and will be acutely aware of anyone trying to use it.

I own 96° and am obtusely aware if anyone else tries to use it.

Published angles don't always match real-world angles though.
Which one will you go with

I've just patented the 'Reflex' frame with a 249° HA and a 241° SA - hands off!

Just send who ever is making the custom one the actual frame

Keep meaning to get a ti 56cm jake..Posted 1 year ago # -
Depends who your builder is, I know lynsky refused to build a custom frame because it was too close to a 456
