When manufacturers talk about double/triple butter; what does that mean?

It’s the number of different changes of wall thicknesses in a tube
Double butting is thick, thin, thick
    Triple is thick, thin, thicker
    Single is thick, thin

    Etc

Triple butted is what brant says, not what rosarch quoted (from what I’ve been told)

I’ve also been told that a frame with a “double butted” sticker may only have the tube on which the sticker is placed as double butted!

531 used to clarify this by saying butted tubes forks and stays if it was all pucker stuff

Seat tubes are rarely double butted. Single butted common.
Butting can be internal or external too.

Hard to bend butted tubing too. So bent rear stays often plain gauge unbutted. Whilst straight stays can be butted.

Smiff. In China now. Meeting with Kinesis the El Guapo manufacturers in Taiwan last week.
We have a couple of frames heading over there right now to check issues and another batch in production which will be jigged tooled and qc’d beyond their highest usual standards.
