I’ve just installed a volume spacer into my shock and unlike the youtube videos the outer body (once unscrewed) kept wanting to return. Do I have to much negative pressure?

Turn the rebound to full slow & compress shock to screw on air can.

I got the air can back on, just wondered why it never stayed put (like in the video’s)

You’re compressing the air between the can and the seal, so you do need to push and turn to get it on.

    I’m not making myself clear.

I had pressure in the opposite direction to the video I was watching. (see 2:12 on this video..here>)

My shock was wanting to stay with the thread not spring away from it.

Sorry Crundi – I misunderstood you question and can’t watch the video at work.

Maybe check the MoJo suspension/fox video for comparison ?

You mean once the shock is depressurized with the air can still fitted the shaft is compressing? (sticking down?)

If so the main air seal has gone and negativly charged the shock, so you’ll need to change the air seals too.

You can remove the air can, with a rubber oil filter (boa strap) with the adjusetr end clamped in a vice and the spacers removed, they do go off with a bit of a bang though, so watch out for the air can flying off in really bad cases.

Any queries feel free to give the workshop a call to discuss them.

I had the same thing yesterday when changing my air sleeve o-rings.

I found that it seemed to be caused by having the pro-pedal inadvertently switched on. I turned it off and gave a slight tug to get it started and the rod extended out as it should do. I left it in the off position and then cycled the shock a couple of times before re-installing the air sleeve.

    HTH.

    Right just so we’re clear…

All this was done on a Canyon Strive 2011 with THE PRO PEDAL OFF AND SLOWEST REBOUND SET.

I de-pressurized the shock completely, with my weight (inadvertently) leaning on the saddle the bike started to compress – which is what I would expect. I put my foot on the rear wheel and lifted from the saddle and the bike returned to its normal uncompressed position. I then started to unscrew the air can (as per instruction) and once fully unscrewed I expected the sleeve to drop down with a tug. It didn’t. Instead, the sleeve was sprung loaded TOWARDS the thread. (is this negative pressure?)

Thanks for all the replies on this by the way.

Sounds like you’re just creating a vacuum between the o-ring that seals against the ID of the sleeve and the o-ring sealing against the shaft of the shock. Just ‘force’ it off the end so that the sleeve is completely clear of the shaft thereby releasing all of the pressure (think you need to remove the hardware to get it right off).

If you think about what is happening you’re enlarging a volume of air by pulling the sleeve back causing a vacuum to form. You just need to get the pressure to balance (by un-sealing one or other of the o-rings).

Yes but it will do that, until you pull the air can off. Doesn’t sound like it’s stuck down as it would have fully compressed when depressurized

What LoCo said – mine was stuck down ie. once the air sleeve was removed it still compressed! Pro-pedal seemed to do it for me.

    Guess the dampener needs a service…. 🙁

Thanks fellas, I’m new to all this so stick with me.

I’ve completed all this with the shock still on the bike. I understand my bike has ‘needle bearings’ apparently they’re a bit specialist and you need specialist tools to get the shock off?

Everything on the shock seems to work, is the above an issue with the shock or does it just need pulling off and back on again?

    Thanks again.

As long as it’s holding air properly and none of the seals are damaged I can’t see why you could just put it back together without fully dismantling. Never seen the space things though so don’t know if you can get it on without completely removing the sleeve.
