It worked!

Mavic 719 with Specialised the captain tyre.

I used electrical tape as rim tape then a rim strip.

Bit of washing up liquid round the bead and went crazy on the track pump and it went up a treat.
Really surprised as a lot of people said I would need a compressor. Track pump is a cheap nasty jobbie that I payed £3 for so even more impressed.

So for those that think it’s a faff, it’s not.

Let’s just hope the front one is as easy.

Hmmmmm, good luck with electrical tape AND sealant… If you do get problems the Stan’s tape, although expensive, is fit and forget.

I made the mistake of saying the front was easy so the back will be too. It wasn’t.Took a near-record breaking number of uses of the F word in one sentence. That was using Nic Evo Snakeskin TL ready on DT EX500s using Stans tape and sealant. Went up first go on the front with a trackpump. Rear took an fifteen minutes of shouting and swearing.

Same rim stans tape and an ardent exo first time though it dropped pressure after a week of hard riding would have been fine but bent the f’in presta thing…

I’m considering going tubeless, what happens if you get say a thorn puncture? Do you just keep cycling & you won’t realise or does it require you to pump it up a bit?

Depends. I’ve picked up thorns without realising, sometimes it hisses for half a dozen revolutions then seals. Last week I had to add air before it sealed. All are preferable to replacing a tube on a cold night when your bike is covered in mud!

What issues are there with electrical tape and sealant?

I do have the Joe’s no flats tubeless kit so have some proper rim tape to use if necessary.

Just thought I’d give electrical tape a go to see if it worked.
If it makes any difference I have done 1 run round the rim with duck tape as well.

I thought that when I had my first attempt, tyre up holding pressure, hit the trails, took a not massive drop at stainburn, BAMM! blew the tyre clean off, not wilding keep to try again, I was ever so upset.

Insulation tape is fine or Gorilla tape for that matter – you just need to make sure rim is grease free and everything is room temp to get a good bond from the tape. Have used insulation tape with Stans fluid for over a year with no problems.

Superstar do some yellow rim tape that looks like stans but is a quarter of the price. Insulation tape seems OK though.

Wondering if I really needed the rim strips. Pretty sure the duck tape and insulation tape will have sealed the rim.

With that in mind can you just buy a schrader valve that locks down on to the rim?
