  • Few days holiday in Germany – where?

We’ve decided to have a bit of a rail trip on the way home from Italy this year, so travelling from Verona to Brussels to home via Germany. Currently thinking of Munich, but open to suggestions.

Been to Berlin before, and so we’re not mucking about with loads of trains, a city with reasonable connections is needed. No requirement for access to the mountains for biking unfortunately. 🙁

    Stuttgart? Wine, Car museums, zoos.
Baden Wuertemburg? Anywhere in that area for Baroque stuff and Black Forest?

Probably a bit far north but Cologne is always a good shout.

Preferred Dusseldorf over Cologne myself, but they’re quite close and both have great beer so it’s just splitting hairs to be honest.

My vote would be Munich or Stuttgart.

    Or, meandering down the Moselle.

If driving from Verona you could, rather than going over the Brenner, veer off at Bozen and head towards Meran (beautiful South Tyrolean city with a stunning backdrop) and stay for a day or two.

Then head up through Vinschgau and go over Reschen pass into Austria, down to Landeck> (avoiding the autobahn,it costs!) Imst> Fernpass > Garmisch.

Really nice drive through the alps.

From Garmisch you can either go to Munich or turn left and have a look at the fairy tale castle and follow the Romantic Road to from Füssen to the north.

Stuttgart, having lived there for 5 years 🙂 Daimler museum is a must, regardless of whether cars are your thing. And then there is the Porsche museum if cars are your thing. Wilhelma is a great zoo/gardens. The main Zentrum is a great place to shop and not so big as to be intimidating. And the whole is a great location centred around the central station with fantastic public transport system. Great art museums too. Pop up the TV tower if you like a meal with a view.

    Rats… Just read the op.

    Train.

Munich is a nice city, so nice in fact I live there.

Plenty to do for a few days. Stroll along the river, nice cafes and restaurants, beer gardens (obviously), nude people.

    Alps just south.

Nice train ride from Verona to Munich. Enjoy.

Train, without faffing around too much, suggests either Munich, Cologne or Brussels as places to stop off, since that’s pretty much the main change stations for the most direct route.
    Or Innsbruck perhaps.
    I’d do any of them.

Funny, Colone suggested by a few of you was also one made by one of Sarah’s friends, so we may have to do a bit of research between there, Munich and Stuttgart. Thanks for the thoughtful reply Alpin, sounds like a great trip that.

Good to know that we’re on the right lines, (pardon the pun) with the general direction of the journey though.

Cologne is a great suggestion – main station is right next to the Cathedral, then you can walk back over bridge (putting a padlock on it on the way) to Lommerzheim, a fantastic pub. They serve kölsch, which if you like lager to be tried!
