Set off for a training ride on xbike at approx 3pm on a lovely sunny Saturday afternoon. At 4pm milage was exceeded,so bikeride is extended. At 4.30pm take a break, take a smug picture for facebook. At 5.00pm, still cycling when suddently bits of the bike fall off, feet are still clipped in, big crash in the middle of a round about.

It’s long walk home whilst limping and carrying bike parts.

Murphys law states bits never fall off close to home, or at convenient moment while stopped for a drink or to admire the view.

Hope you are ok. I find if I break the bike badly the subsequent accident always destroys my phone just to make sure I can’t ring for help.

Smugness before crash (little did I know bits of my bike were about to fall off…)

Yeah surfer, I am ok, I was really shaky on Sat and slept most of Sunday just getting over the shock…I have lots of bruises and scabs, I could post the pictures but I will spare you all from that! 🙂

That Shimano setup appears to cause lots of grief, well rubbish imo.
    Nice pics 😉
    We like bruise pics 😆

To be honest, I am quite proud of them. The bruising on my knee is quite bad…Ill see if I can capture the essence of them well enough to do it justice…

Ouch, was it an over the handlebars job?

I was about to comment about Shimano falling off, but that looks like an Campag Athena 11 speed crank 😮

Edit: or maybe its a 105 crank?

I headed straight into the roundabout and I am not sure how I landed but I was still clipped in on the otherside.

I had a similar experence on the Euston Road in heavy traffic when my lovely Eggbeater* snapped. Tarmac hurt, cars would have hurt a lot more but thankfully they avoided the cartwheeling cyclist…..

*Since removed from all my bikes. They’re rubbish.

Some good advice on there, as I am waiting on the bike repair shop to contact me re the crash check and how much the repair is going to be, and what my options are. Of course I know little about bikes, so I need all the help I can get.

So did the crank sheer off or did it somehow come lose and just fall off?

Those bruises look very painful :s

Looks sore, not as colourful as it could be though.

    – yeah, was it just the pinch bolts working loose? Schoolboy error…*

    *…which I’ve managed on a MTB!

Not sure, just know about having hurty knees and bike bits breaking off whilst I was cycling. The bike repair folk should give me an insight soon enough.

SaboteurCherie, if you need your knees rubbing better i will crawl to your place on broken glass and sort the job out for yer (just say the word) ;O) Lol

Thanks for the offer Lawnmanmx but I think I’ll be OK. You could still crawl on broken glass and post about it, that would be amusing.

surely you would of realised the axle slowly working its way out of the crank?

What about the preload bolt that should be on the outside of the crank?

    Surely that stops this happening?

I honestly don’t know at what point in the bike ride it came off! I was limping so I wasn’t exacly keen on going back the way I came.
