Does anyone have any experience of ownership?
Particularly keen to hear about their temperament around kids and in general.
Also very keen to hear about Miniature Bull Terriers.

Yes got a 2 year old dog, had him since 8 weeks so were able to socialise and introduce him to the world as we wanted. We’ve ended up with a lazy slob that just sleeps and eats all day. They are complete clowns, he does some of the funniest most comical stuff i’ve ever seen dogs do.

His temperament is fantastic and of all the others i’ve met have never met a bad one, super friendly to people, loves other dogs, loves children but can become overly excited and as he’s quite heavy (33kg) and clumsy it can be a problem with young ones. Ours is a wimp, if another dog tells him off he will run away with his head down and tail between his legs, not confrontational atall.

Did I mention they’re stubborn? The most strong minded dogs around, you really have to love the breed and REALLY want one to put up with this aspect of their personality. Ours constantly tries to ‘pull rank’ and you need to always let them know you’re the boss.

A lot of people love ours but you also get the people that cross the road or put their dog on a leash stereotyping the breed which gets tiresome.

He sounds superb, I love that kind of character. How does he pull rank for example?

As we have a 2 year old son, im considering a miniature version for reasons you mention above but would like to know if they are exactly the same temperament wise or not. My Mrs is yet to be convinced about their looks so statements like yours above should hopefully help me persuade her that its all about the character.

Please ring around the dog homes. There is bound to be one in need of a home. Jun9lebunny sums them up to a tee. They’re bloody hilarious!

Mate had one when I was a lot younger. Great personality and temperament (I can only speak of that one) I was very fond of it and always had a soft spot for them since. His used to head butt you in the back of the leg to walk faster!
I actually think they look nice!

Would I have one with very young children? I doubt it. I dont suspect their temperamnet is much different to many other family dogs but they are immensley strong.

    I embrace the fugly!
Actually, I think they are rather handsome in a bulldozer way.

I’ve made contact with someone trying to rehome a miniature version that is being bullied by her owners chihauhua’s(!) so hopefully viewing this evening.
Failing that I will be looking at rehoming from a dog home, but I’m keen on a young one in order to instill more training as we have a young child to consider.

Oh they’re gorgeous, it’s a love/hate thing but it’s always nice when you come accross someone on a walk that absolutely falls in love with him which happens atleast a few times a week.

By pull rank, I mean that he will sort of test you and every month or so we will go through episodes where he completely plays up – for instance, he knows full well that he shouldn’t do something but will do it regardless, traits such as being even more stubborn than usual and just not doing what you say – a quick telling off though and reinforcing your the boss and he’s back to his stupid self.

One thing I notice about their temperament is that they are hard to upset, you can literally do anything you like to ours and he has never snapped or been nasty – ever. Having owned a red setter and cocker spaniel also, this one easily has the best temperament.

If I was in your situation, I would try and get the youngest possible as I would with any breed for the reasons you mention. Here’s a few pics of ours:

I think they’re cracking dogs. We’ve got a Rhodesian ridgeback but we did think about getting a EBT. Can remember talking to a breeder at discover dogs at cruffs and she said pretty much what people above have said. Oh and they don’t jump over garden fences, they go through ’em.

    jun9lebunnie is dead on.
I have a cross breed, I think he’s part EBT part Pig.
I got him at 9 months from the RSPCA, he’s now 10. He is the funniest creature I’ve ever met, he does such illogical/random things. They do push you a little, and need to be in no doubt as to who the boss is but once this is established are happy as larry.
They are GREEDY, I haven’t found a foodstuff which mine won’t eat. Raw garlic, salad on the plus side giving him pills/tablets is easy; he’ll beg for one!
He’s great with visiting children who love him dearly. My niece could say his name before she could my wifes!

Love that! The pigs called Jimmy, Rufus loves him to bits and follows him everywhere.

My parents had one several years back when I lived at home. We had the dog for about 5 months then one day without any provocation it attacked me. Took it to various dog trainers, had it castrated but it still kept trying to have a chunk out of me.

They are very strong and I was lucky to get away without serious injury.
We gave it to an EBT rescue centre in the end a told them about its behaviour. I was glad to see the back of the horrible little bugger.

We had 2 bitches a good few years ago and they have been the best pooches we ever had, hands down. Proper characters and superb with both people and other animals. Would highly recommend them to anyone but watch out as others have already commented on them being bloody stubborn!!

Harmitans – what a shame, was it a rescue or did you have it from a pup?

Geat pics jb, he’s a handsome bugger.
Do you/anyone have any more daft tales such as begging for tablets?

The bitch im looking at tonight is 20 weeks old, not ideal obviously, but hopefully not beyond capable training.
Apparently she’s immensly friendly and great with kids, but is being bullied by the households chihuahua’s (!) hence needing rehoming.

It was a rescue dog when we got it aged around 2-3 years old. Unsure of its past and this may have had some bearing on it’s behaviour but it was just too much of a risk to keep.

Strangely it was completely fine around the rest of the family but took a serious dislike to me.

Mine doesn’t bark much, if he’s unhappy with another animal; he doesn’t bite or growl. He just goes straight in and headbutts but this is rare and only when sacred.
He’s very excitable even at 10.
One thing which has surprised me and I don’t know why is how he makes friends. He remembers people even after meeting them once and it is also very obvious that he has favorites. A few people will be nearly sat on whenever they come over. Others, he’s a bit “meh”.
They are clever but daft, they do stupid stuff but know how best to get something they want. He’ll occasionally “tell” us to go to bed if its late and he’s tired. he’ll be the bestest, butter wouldn’t melt dog if there’s pizza around (roll over, lie, give paw etc)
I love how he sits. Not on his haunches but properly right on his arse with his legs out in front. Sorry for the essay. I love my dog.
