So my check engine light is on. I’m taking the car to the garage today.

Car is a 60 plate SEAT Leon FR with a 2.0 TSI engine.

No drivability symptoms as far as I can tell. Car pulls well through out the rev range and doesn’t seem to have any loss of power.

Mechanic said he’ll stick it on the diagnostic machine before lunch.

Anyone want to take a punt at the fault?

Remotely enabled by the garage cos they’re a bit short of work this week. Bet they can fit you in as a special favour straight away… 😉

    Cam or crank position sensor?

    ^^^

Pretty sure its not the timing belt. I think I would have noticed the valves running into the pistons before I dropped the car off at the garage

ooohhh, good one. Scary enough sounding to make you hand over your credit card.

If not exhaust, I’m going with..Nothing

Just had that on our car. £234 later it’s still running OK and I can’t tell the difference.

I miss plugs, points and carbs. An hour or two fiddling on a Saturday morning and the old girl would be purring away. Then it’s out to the garage to have a crack at the car, 😀

    Bulb out, rear left indicator.

I kid you not, our Touran did this….

Get an OBD2 reader. They are about a fiver on eBay.

Plug it in and see what the fault code is yourself.

Get a £5 Bluetooth ODB2 reader off eBay and a £0.99 code reader app for your phone and you’ll save a fortune.

Some of the codes returned are a bit cryptic but you can usually Google to find out what’s up.

indicator out makes the indicators flash at 2x the rate on my Seat.
coil pack dead makes the ecu light flash rather than come on, and it’s pretty damn obvious something’s wrong with the engine.
washer bottle is the other light, and the alarm is so loud it scares the living daylights out of you.
don’t recall if the light came on when the electric window mechanism broke (well known VAG issue), but the ECU print out certainly reported an out-of-limit on the window mechanism.

There’s nothing wrong with but its time is up. You’ve seen Logan’s Run yeah?

Do they still have that exhaust sensor problem?

    So the results are in

Throttle flap motor is generating the fault code.

Garage is going to try cleaning out the throttle body but it will likely need replaced if the motor is on the way out.

They have a tendency to strip the gears, causing it at first to jump slightly, then finally to just spin and not operate the valve at all. Replaced a few of those, not at all uncommon.

New throttle body is being fitted

£300 for new part and fitting.

Could have done without that expense at this time of year but I think the garage has quoted me a very reasonable price for the job.

Turbo went on the last car so I know the bill could have been much bigger
