have recently bought a very shiny lump of rock that made the other half happy…. and am looking at insurance?
any words of wisdom? I was going to see about adding it to the house insurance but anyone more savy and have any advice they would like to pass on?

*Decent* House insurance is generally fine. If we’re talking big money or something you wouldn’t easily be able to replace from a high street retailer, or if you can’t use traditional house insurance for whatever reason then you can look at specialist insurance.

Ask whoever you bought the ring from about insurance first – otherwise speak to a company called th march who do a range of insurances specifically for this.

House insurance and get it done quick. The day after we got my wife’s engagement ring, it fell off as she got off a bus. Pitch black and raining we managed to find it in the road after 20 minutes of frantic searching and many tears.

I will have a look at th march, was dubious of going with the company from the jewellers as you never know if theres a commission going on and the like.

All risks policy; you will need valuation certificate – first one at or soon after purchase should be free from jeweller.
Subsequent (annual) revaluations will be charged; you could leave value unchanged but these things tend to increase in value and insurers will not just take your valuation guess.

2) house insurance should be fine unless you’ve gone properly mental on the rock, you may not even need to tell them, but check to make sure, and good shout about coverage abroad.

You need full worldwide accidental cover, depending on your home insurance and the value of the ring it could be cheaper to add it to the house insurance as a named item or get separate cover for it.

We got my missus’ wedding ring insured through a specialist insurer recommended by the guy who made it which includes an agreed valuation & it being re-made to spec if anything were to happen, I think a lot of policies just give you a voucher for their partner on the high street for an “equivalent” ring – something to check for if it’s something that wouldn’t be easily remade.

About to buy another one for someone (to replace the rather convincing £7.99 job from Amazon…) and will be insuring the hell out of the new one.

I wouldn’t bother at that cost. The ring only needs to hang around long enough to make it to the wedding then a functional cheap band does the job after.

Mrs Dubs rings are on the house insurance policy as named items. Covered worldwide.

I would not bother. The outlay cost of the ring is insignificant to the actual running costs of it’s wearer. Having said this, ours are on house insurance.

I took out a 3 year policy from the jeweller’s which is a shame as the engagement hasn’t lasted that long…

All’s good if you can afford that sort of money I guess, me I prefer things that aren’t so expensive that I’d need to insure them in the first place 😉

I’m also relying on house insurance for ours, but I’m going to check whether it covers abroad, I hadn’t even thought of that!

yeah my quote from th march was a few hundred – obviously my partner not as lucky as to have a quote of over £400!
