    Wow 🙂 Cant wait etc.

However, I think Ian Bell is getting stiff’ed. But a new Elite would be nice.

There’s been a good Elite clone out for years in the form of the games made by egosoft.

I used to play Elite on the Atari ST, off to get an emulator again.

The best thing about Elite, when it first came out, was that it was massively ambitious, unlike anything before it and a real technological masterpiece. As such, at the time, it was wicked fun. Try playing it now though and it is unbearably dull (as are all the modern versions) and, unfortunately, as this new version will be. There are just much better game concepts out there these days. Just let it lie peacefully in it’s rightfully deserved place in history!

For me, who spends very little time playing games, it’s the high-concept cinematic approach of something like Black Ops, where every second is exciting and it’s like you’re in an action movie – as opposed to trudging around identical galaxies for hours on end. Unless they somehow combine the two, that would be awesome (but it wouldn’t really be Elite). YMMV of course.

I always found Call of Duty very linear :-(. But as you say awesome eye candy.

Bringing the two together would Epic!

It’s a good time to be a retro gamer, thanks to Kickstarter. As well as this we’ve Peter Molyneux making a successor to Populous, Jordan Weisman making a Shadowrun game, a remake of Leisure Suit Larry…

Yup it’s stunning. Great graphics, epic battles over stunning vistas of worlds – deep strategy and economics topped with hints of the old X-wing games of yore. The modding scene is immense (wan’t a small escort carrier, well..,..download it) and really adds some great customization and further depth to the game, as the world is effectively a living and breathing economy….modding the game into a total war scenario can be really entertaining.

I play it because my missus is an economist undergraduate and she loves it. We use the same account as the game takes a lot of time, working on conquering at least half of the universe and becoming the dominant corporation in the game 😉 She rakes in the money, I command the military and blow shit up.

As a kid in the 90’s I grew up with complicated pc games, I can’t abide most console games. COD et al bore me to shit and there’s no thinking involved. Battlefield 3 can be fun, anything with a little strategy and more than just a shoot button is fun.

Then again, I’m good at and enjoy the modded and visually updated version of Falcon 4. So I’m probably just weird.

I’ve tried playing fps on my ps3 & none of them can produce the excitement or the original goldeneye or perfect dark (how cool was the laptop gun in multiplayer? Place them near an area where weapons or medkits spawn & wait for the swearing to begin)

Not sure if its cos these games were set in relatively cramped corridors & the modern games are set in wide open spaces but I tend to get lost more on all the demos I’ve downloaded.

Must admit I’ve bought Halo 4 recently and the Doom trilogy for the XBox, spent more time playing Doom……

Imagine the basic concept of Elite but in a Multiplayer universe that is policed by NPCs and in other areas only by other players.

is it like the FPS games where you get your arse kicked everytime you play? Seems that unless you invest a massive amount of timein the game you’re just cannon fodder for the 15yo’s who spend all their time playing.

Kinda puts me off a bunch of games that I might quite like, for those of us with families, jobs, mtb habits and limited time I prefer single player where you can just switch on load up a gamesave and play for 30mins, hard day at the office? playing crap? just adjust the difficulty and not get your arse handed to you the whole time you are playing (which does not lighten your mood)

Yeah I know PC enemies aren’t as good real ones

The reason there aren’t games like 1990s FPS is that they were done in the 1990s. People don’t necessarily want more of the same re-done. I certainly don’t.

I really enjoyed GTA IV even though it was a linear storyline. Because they took that idea and did it really well. It was one of the most cinematic games I’ve played not just in appearance but in terms of plot. It really was part game, part movie, and I enjoyed it because of that.

If you want to plug aliens all night long then you still can.

And that’s where Mrs Toast’s image breaks down – there are loads of games with an entire city as the level map. That was a pipe dream for me 20 years ago.

Like I said it’s called Eve.

A friend of mine played that for a while. It took up most of his time (even though he claimed it didn’t) and it was all he ever wanted to talk about. Games like that don’t take any real skill, the only currency is time. A bit pathetic really. Fortunately he broke free and now has a life. YMMV.

Exactly, time to move onto new ideas. You can always bust out the old consoles or emulators if you want a blast from the past.

Well yes anyone who has lots of time to play on it will have better spacecraft and more familiar with the game. However, a person who is a good gamer will beat a poor gamer who spends all day playing. I use to play it but each time I have only for small amount at a time. The last time there was 3 of set up a little pirate corp and went around scamming people, in game it’s allowed, and picking off people in bigger craft by using tatics. It didn’t always work and we attracted the attention of the biggest Corp at the time in the game who hunted us on site. It was good fun and darting around the universe cloaking and hiding from dozens of players was a right laugh. Incidentally the Corp in question got cleaned out by a patient scammer who spent months working up the ranks to get access to the in game banks, he cleaned them out of everything and fled, leaving the corp to collapse.

    Ooh I’ve waffled a bit.

Thanks for proving my point! 😆 That’s exactly the type of story my mate was always coming out with. He thought they were cool and fascinating. They weren’t.

Well they’re clearly not for you Zllog, not everyone likes the same thing.

You clearly prefer Black Ops which is great game I’m currently playing the second one, they are linear but so was the mighty Doom. In reality yes the maps were spread out but it always has an entry and exit point and some keys to pick up to open the doors. Multiplayer is what adds the biggest variety to games and pretty much has back to the pong days.

was that legit? ie rogue player charmed his way into the corp then left with all the cash. or did he hack their accounts? If it’s the former it sounds a pretty in depth game

No hacked accounts he built up the trust to become of the senior members to allow access to the in game banks, cleared out everything one night.

Multiplayer is what adds the biggest variety to games and pretty much has back to the pong days.If it had been around when I was a kid, I would have been glued to my computer playing it! Fully appreciate what an amazing feat it is to have such a fully-fleshed out “universe” as part of a game. But then, when I was a kid, I had no concept of how precious & limited time is. So I consider an adult playing that sort of game a very sad waste of time. IMO, YMMV, etc, etc! The only reason I “prefer” black ops is because you can play a whole session in a half hour or so.

Fully agree with you about multiplayer, though. Halo multiplayer is awesome, much better than the single player game. I just wish I could play it occasionally and not get so utterly destroyed, but unfortunately all games like that you have to play constantly, and know the maps inside out, in order to come out on top!

eve is looking tempting, but not sure* i have the time and it’s a subscription, fps or single player game pay one price and can play none stop for 3 weeks then same again 12months later no worries, subscription and I’m paying even if I only play for an hour a month

*I know I don’t have the time, but hey 10pm-2am is dead time, it’s remarkable how little sleep you can get by on 🙂

I tried the EVE trial as (as is always the way) I had a mate raving about it. I was hoping to find a multiplayer version of Freespace.

Long story short, I didn’t get on with it. The bulk of the game seems to be Elite-esque trading between players and systems, which is nice but really window dressing for me. The combat system looks pretty but is soulless, you pick a target and sit and watch whilst your ship fires feebly at it until something explodes. And, criminally, the Y-axis control is the wrong way round and you can’t change it (what year is it again?)

I wanted to love EVE, but it wasn’t for me. I’d dearly, dearly love a modern X-Wing / Freespace / I-War / Freelancer type game; why does no-one make them any more?

Cougar that’s what i thought at first, turns out the guy who encouraged me to try it was happy mining away for ore in the safe zones. The others I played with weren’t and wanted to go out stealing the ore and ships from said ‘carebears’ this is much more fun. The Combat system is a little automatic sadly but there is some skill.

I’ve not played it now for a good few years and it’s been revamped, I’m sure there was talk of making it link with another game they had in development so when you landed on a space port you could play FPS style.

Games like that can take up a lot of your time if you let it but control it and your fine, plus there’s 24 hours in a day. I played them more when the kids were young, when they had their naps and in bed early so was house bound used some of that time for that.
