Recently redecorated living room and were looking at replacement pendant light. We found one we liked the look of but it was £200, so I’ve made one fairly identical myself for about £20. Only a prototype so far but happy with how it’s looking.

Obviously I want it to be completely safe and legal so does anyone know if I now need to get an electrician out to inspect it and sign it off? Any rough ideas on what I should expect to be charged for that?

You could get it PAT tested. Likely to be quite expensive for a one off, though. That said if you used the correct rating cable, not damaged the insulation, wired it correctly and earthed it if needed then there’s not a lot to be wrong.

Judging by some of the monstrosities I’ve seen for sale, you get David Blunkett to look it over whilst thoroughly inebriated…

In reality, given that you aren’t going to be selling it, just make sure all metal parts are earthed and cables are sufficiently sized and mechanically protected.
