    Looking for a cheap ie £30 ish, back up light,
    Keen to get a floody rather than spotty light, any recommendations

    Can’t comment on that particular light but as a general rule, XPG = Flood, XML = spot.

    Indeedy as per Dave, XPG tend to be more floody, obviously the lens helps too, my only criticism of that light is the 3 modes. I’d prefer one with a hi/med/low(/flash) setting rather than hi/lo/flash.
    Experience with the old P7 torches suggest they make the normal (low), too low.

    I thought it was the other way round.

    Due to the larger die XML tend to be a broader beam which needs a good reflector or optic to get more throw.

    XPG tend to be a narrower beam to start with as the die is smaller.

    that was my understanding (i don’t suggest I’m any expert), and anecdotal evidence of my Troutie mini XPG (& MJ-872’s I’ve seen) is super wide beam and my XM-L’s have tighter (Spottier) beams that have loads of throw.
