was reading on mtbr that someone was having problems with spokes coming loose on spank stiffy rims

I’m building up some spanks and was wondering if anyone’s tried the pro lock nipples, and if they are worth the extra cash

A better investment would be the wheelpro book – £9 and well worth. If you still want to ‘lock’ the thread Loctite 222 on standard nipples would do the job. But yes you tension high enough to avoid loosening spokes.

I build my wheels with copaslip in the nipples and chain oil between the rim and nipple to reduce wind up when building. Never have them come loose. I would imagine that it’s due to a lack of tension. I’d say no need for the pro-loc nipples.

Yep, no need IMO apart from maybe heavily dished wheels under heavy riders.

I’ve worked on wheels built with them, and think they’re horrible things-very reminiscent of trying to true a wheel with siezed nipples(can’t see them loosening mind, though it’s not a problem I get anyway).
