About to order a Nikon D40 and I have a 4GB memory SD card.

However are there any "faster" cards that would speed up the camera between shots…..if a card does such a thing.

Wheter a faster card is available depends on the card you have! There are some very fasted cards available, but there are limitations to how fast your camera can read write… The d40 won't make use of the faster cards in the same way a d3 would.

If you intend to take shots in 'raw' mode a card such as a sandisk ultra2 or extreme3 would be beneficial.

Rob Galbraith has a Cf/Sd card speed database unfortunately its not been updated in a while so no D40. But it will give you an idea of the advantages of a good card.

The D40 might have a buffer, which will hold the shots before writing it to the card (my D300 does). You only really need a fast card if you shoot in continuous mode a lot. Or are very impatient when uploading pics to your computer!
