This one is new to me this year and I’m wondering if it’s a common thing or what to do about it.

I’ve always had pretty watery eyes and last year got referred to a specialist by the optician. Counter intuitively, they’re watery because they are very dry and it runs onto my face a lot because I have small, blocked tear ducts. Anyway, sorted the tear ducts out, started using moisturising drops quite regularly and haven’t had much trouble since.

This last week though, it’s all gone a bit odd. Eyes watering loads, really itchy, swollen corners with sore cracks in the skin like you can get on your hands or lips when it’s really cold. I’ve never had it in my eyes before though! I don’t think it’s conjunctivitis as there is no redness of the eyeball or ‘discharge’ (apart from the tears). Upping the rate of eye drops applied has eased things a bit.

I always wear eye protection when riding and haven’t changed the amount I’m riding. The weather’s dropped a bit cooler but it’s never been an issue before so I don’t think it’s that.

    Puzzled….and uncomfortable, any thoughts?

i also have the same problem. i’ve had it for the best part of 20 years and is a real pain in the arse. if the room is warm and the air is dry…then i sit there rubbing my eyes like mad. if its cold and windy outside i look like ive been crying. none of my tears lubricate my eyes either.
i’ve tried all sorts of drops and none of them have worked very well…what makes things worse is that suffer from keratoconus in my left eye. i’ve had this condition for about the same amount of time and it was regularly monitored by the eye specialist team. there hasnt been any change for the last few years and i got signed off by them about 4 years ago.

recently i had a really nasty eye infection…red eyes, blurred vision, very gritty and itchy, very sore and hard to open and focus etc. the gp though it was conjunctivitis and gave me antibiotics which made it even worse (whites of the eyes swelled up…looking like some weird jelly trying to ooze out of my eye). my gp tried to refer me to my local eye hospital but they suggested i go to a red eye clinic (at local opticians) first and if they recommended further treatment then they would look at it
the optician had a good detailed examination and couldnt spot any of the tell tale symptoms of conjunctivitis and sai it was an extreme reaction to the initial antibiotics.

she then eventually recommended i use some non preservative based eye drops called HYLO-FORTE. not cheap at around £17 a bottle…cheaper if you get it on prescription
my eyes took about 3 weeks to go back to normal but using the drops were the best thing. i still use them when my eyes feel dry and itchy and they work great.

That’s good enough recommendation for me to try it gonzy, thanks. Ordered.

it works like a lubricant and feels oily to touch but does a good job of coating the whole eye…plus you can use it as often as needed because its preservative free.

most pharmacies stock it but it’ll be a bit more than the price in the link..so if you can get your gp to write you a prescription then you’ll get it for half price

hope it works for you…but get your eyes checked to make sure its not the start of some nasty eye infection to be on the safe side

let me know how you get on
