  • Dropper post alternative lever options ?

So I have a specialized command post with the grip mounted lever that I’ve bastardised to run next to my ergon grip.

Im having an issue with routing the cable. The lever comes with a metal tube that effectively turns the routing 90 degrees from the lever. However the tube is rubbing quite badly on the end of my Xt brake lever.

Another lever option was the left hand gear shifter type from specialized but it’s something like £60.

Am I able to run another brands lever ?

Or do you have any suggestions on what I can do to alleviate the issue.

    Thanks.

I use a KS southpaw lever with my command post. £35 from tweeks

No idea on how the specialised one works but I’m sure I’ve read the bontrager lever is £17. When I looked at one in a shop it looked pretty decent quality.

My command post did the same. I took the bent tube off and run the cable straight out from the collar. Makes routing much better. It’s now much less sensitive to having the cable set just right too.

Nickjb I’ve looked at doing that but I would need a massive loop of cable to route it right.

Joe that bontrager one looks interesting. Cheers.

The Bontrager one’s really good. Bikeyoke one is really, really nice but expensive and maybe not massively tough- I bent mine in a crash, to be fair I also smashed myself to bits though.

Prior to there being aftermarket levers you could buy people repurposed left hand shifters for this. I managed to do it with an old slx front shifter that was never gonna get used again (xfusion hilo post). Followed instructions on a thread on here I think. You just remove the ratchet so that the thumb shifter just works in the return spring.

Northwind…. I don’t suppose you know which end of the cable goes in the bontrager version. Is it the end with the nipple on or the end you cut ?

We still run a couple of those levers with our 2x set up with the metal tube and XT levers. Not had a problem with them rubbing. Can you post up a photo so we can see how you have got them set up.
All the rest are 1x and under bar levers.

    Tracey,

I’ve give up trying to post photos on here since the demise of photobucket.

Basically I have my grip, tjen the lever and then my brake.

It’s rubbing away at the lever at the end of the reservoir.

The Bontrager lever clamps the cut end of the cable.

Just reread it. Ours are mounted onto the end of the grip instead of the grip lock ring. Brakes are also mounted inboard for one finger ease. Dont know if that helps

I can recommend the wolf tooth remote, works if you clamp at the remote or at the dropper. Tbh a bit expensive for what it is but it does work really well.

Can really recommend the wolf tooth remotes. Got 2 and they’ve both been really good. Couple of shops import wolf tooth stuff now, Ghyllside cycles in Ambleside is one. Not cheap but way better than anything I’ve tried and I’ve used quite a few since my Maverick speedball back in the day

Bontrager drop line works a treat. Integrates with my levers really nicely

I’m using Bontrager remotes on both Pro and Bontrager seatposts, cable is clamped at the lever end. For the money you can’t go wrong, it’s a nicer lever than the Pro (Trans-X) one both in quality and ergonomics.

The Bontrager one sounds ideal however my current one has the nipple in the lever.

Would it be a problem doing away with the nipple on the cable altogether and just clamping it at both ends ?

That’s what I’ve done with the Pro post. Works fine.

You don’t even need to cut the nipple off the cable.
Just pull it through and tighten the grub screw.
Got two of them running like that.

I can sell you the Spesh underbar lever for £25. It uses a ball bearing action and is slick

What about a KS southpaw… Been offered one but not sure if it is spring loaded for the return or does that not matter ?

    Serious question to you Renton.
Several people have suggested to you a cheap and easy solution to your minor problem but you won’t take the help offered.
Why ask if you’re not interested in the advice?

Got the Bontrager lever running on an RSP Plummet and a Brand X Ascend.

Nice lever, much better than the originals.

Thanks for the suggestions folks. Been offered a southpaw slightly cheaper than the bonty one so gone with that.

Singlespeedstu….. I’m sorry but what is wrong with weighing up all options. Yes the bontrager one looks good but I’ve been offered a southpaw cheaper than the bonty one hence the question.

    Thanks for the input though.

    Furry muff.
Te southpaw is a bit fiddlier to set up though and can be difficult to clamp up tight enough on carbon bars.

    I don’t have carbon bars.

Good thing about the KS lever is it is almost infinitely adjustable and simple so you can get it exactly where you want it. It does need to be done up tight though, as said above. No return spring, so when not under tension is a little bit slack/rattly if I’m really picky, though not really noticeable when actually riding.

I’ve just got the Brand X Ascend XL which came with their 1x lever, action is ok, nice shape, but looks weak and pivot is pretty sloppy. KS will probably go back on.

Just for balance I hated my southpaw. Couldn’t get it to not spin on carbon or Alu bars even using fibre paste and do it up very tight.
