Driveways and Kerbs (Cheltenham/Gloucester in particular)

Looking at getting a block paved driveway put in and a kerb dropped and wondered if anyone had any suggestions in the Cheltenham / Gloucester area?

Had one quote from Sean Gorman of County and Country Roads. Asked for two different areas as I wasn't sure how much I wanted done or the type of brick. One quote came back of £3000 and no specified brick either. Area will be either 55m^2 or 30m^2. How does this sound to people?

A neighbour is also wanting a driveway done. In tarmac to save costs and this came out at around £2500 for a similar area. Does this sound right? We're looking to get them done at the same time with hopefully a bit of a discount...

I would imagine that the kerb drop would have to be done by the Local Authority?

Do it as one job, but don't do anything until you contact the council, there will be a cost to this...

Just had a drive done by Bob Shackell (Shackell landscapes)

Firstly, he was the only one to arrive on time for a quote out of the few i asked. Turned up on time, too and kept us informed as to what was happening.

I am pleased with the work.

Yep sounds about par for the course with my one quote Dancake.
Realise that I need to get all the paperwork for the council done but looking for some companies that can do it for me when I get to that stage

I meant the actual kerb dropping (not the red tape) would need to be done by the COuncil - certainly the case in the boroughs that I live and work. About £750 just for the kerb drop.

I work for Highways depo and at one time only ourselves could undertake the works ,but it wasnt cost effective so we allow contractors to carry out the works ,but you can carry out the works yourself or any builder friend could do it for you for peanuts ,its a dead easy job I have done loads of em ,just go to Townhall and get a permit ,pety I live in Bolton or I could do it for you

When I had it done I had to use a council approved contractor for the dropped kerb. Kerb plus about a 3x5m area of tarmac was around £2500.

I've heard that the contractor needs £1m public insurance and other things so not an option to do it myself.

I'm expecting about £700 for the kerb but not sure what to expect for a driveway. do properly laid tarmac and block paving differ in price that much?

Not sure how true but my guy said it wouldn't be any cheaper (or perhaps only a litle) to use tarmac than brick as oil prices have made tarmac quite expensive these days.

You might want to check out whether you need planning permission, either for the dropped curb because you live on a certain class of road, or under the new planning rules regarding laying impermeable surfaces (if using tarmac).

Regarding who can do the work, it varies by authority, in Nottinghamshire "A dropped kerb can only be carried out by us or contractors appointed by us. If work is carried out by anyone else, we will charge for both rectifying the original work and installing a new dropped kerb." . Check here

Some folks near me have little wooden ramps.
They were refused planing permission FFS
