  • Drilling rims?
  • RustySpanner

Fancy pair of rims but they only come in a Presta fitting.
    The wheelbuilder won’t do it.

Do most bikeshops still offer this or is it considered a bit risky nowadays for some reason?

How does the wheelbuilder think it got there in the first place?

Anyway, just do it yourself. 8mm drill bit iirc

What’s wrong with the Presta valve?

Just put a drill through it, many many people do it no problems

I can understand a shop/wheelbuilder not wanting to do it. Warranty would be a potential problem for them.

Happily done it to my own rims and will again. DIY

Exactly, I’m not having a go at them.

Honestly, drills and shiny things are not my strong point.
i think I’ll ask my nice friendly LBS.

complete piece of piss to do. Just make sure you clean off the swarf afterwards cos you’ll get a puncture otherwise.

last time I did this (Christmas eve, small village, Isla Bikes making a mistake…potential disappointed child) I used one of these

more precision, smooth edges. Everyone’s a winner

Tapered reamer will enlarge the hole evenly.

I like to be able to have the choice.

I don’t mind Presta valves, but when it’s freezing cold, dark and pissing down, I find Schrader easier.

And you can never have enough grommets.

Edit – thanks, the reamer looks safe enough for even me to use.
    Appreciated.

8mm drill clean any sharp edges with a round file afterwards.

I currently have rims that only take presta valves – which is OK, but I think Schrader are just that little bit more idiot(me)-proof.

I am always at risk of bending the smaller threaded bit with my cack-handedness with my minipump – especially if it is cold and pissing down as mentioned above.

Schrader are just easier for clumsy/tired/pissed off folk, I guess…..

I’ve never under stood this preference for shrader valves. The fill with crap if you lose the cap, don’t retain themselves in the room because they just like through a hole, and make a poor connection to most hand pumps.

    Prestas are WAY better.

    Great.

I can buy a Schrader valve tube pretty much anywhere, including Rawtenstall at 3pm on a Sunday afternoon, motorway service stations, Wales, Argos, Barrow and Tesco.

Not totally sure what that means but they don’t snap leaving you stranded when you have no air in your tyre and its raining and your fingers don’t work because its so cold.

    Presta suuucks. Schrader 4EVA

What tubeless valve for schrader hole ?

That’s why I drilled mine, so I could use motorbike valves for ghetto tubeless.

I reckon there is a large overlap of Schrader valve users and those running 1x gear systems. Both groups seem to suffer with anything more fiddly than a lump hammer.

8mm bit and a deburring knife. But when customers ask me too do it for them on new wheels I have to decline on two grounds one warranty the other product liability if the rim fails I have to prove it wasn’t because of the work I carried out modifying the rim.
