   I am just about to fit a doofer to my commute/do everything bike as the recent weather has started to get to the cheap altus/alivo set-up. I will be putting gears back on for days out, I am not that strange! However I was just wondering about the front mech and whether the doofer can take up enough slack to allow changing between the 2 front rings (it is a 2+bash set up, but not sure of ring sizes). This is mainly because I wont be taking off the front mech due to laziness so wondering about whether I should move the shifter so I am not tempted to try it out on the road

   I am sure that if it was possible someone would have done it on here but can't find anything on the search function

   i know someone who did something similar, but across 3 front chainrings, and had to use a rear mech to take up the slack.

   I don't know if a doofer would have the capacity.

   I've been wondering about doing a 3x1 setup just to be nichier than those 1x9ers keep us posted if it works!

   I doubt a doofer would take up the usual 10-12T links of slack.

   What about getting a chainring that is just a bit smaller than the middle one?

    Although I think that is getting away from what I wanted in a cheap and easy mod so that the bike doesn't need any maintenance during the week and will take 1/2 - 1hr to sort for weekend riding, but could do a play in the woods as is

    You may not know it but you are showing the first symptom of SSA (Single Speed Affliction).

    Starting to experiment with drivetrains soon leads to the conviction that they are too much hassle.

    Not bothering to shave daily is another sign, and you know you are too far gone when you ditch your suspension.

    Take it from one who knows

    There are pluses - the girls who ride SS have the finest shaped (better stop before the mods get me...)

    I only shave once a week and already ditched suspension for the commutes - this doesn't bode well...

    So Al, does the rear mech style tensioner have 2 jockey wheels - cant quite make it out for sure in that photo

    I don't have a spare mech (hence using altus gear). The idea is to take off the shifter and cable and rear mech to save them from the grit and grime of winter road riding. I would then be left with a front mech and shifter so was wondering whether I would have 2 speeds or just 1. If it is just 1 I will probably move the shifter out of temptation along the bar

    I have a 5 week old daughter who is taking up time and money hence the thriftiness of my solutions/queries. If I win a bit on the lottery a two wheel tensioner will be on its way, but till then I will have a play over the weekend...
