So you guys in STW don’t have the slightest bit of interest in my 2008 Stumpie FSR what with the straight head tube, 26 inch wheels, 9mm QRs and the like…but I’ve gone and purchased my new bike and it’s got to go one way or another. So it’ll be eBay or possibly a mate who’s after a new bike.
Anyway the point is taking aside your views on this old tech, could I have some suggestions on value from anyone who has sold something vaguely similar recently?
Stumpie FSR alu frame Horst link upgraded rear shock (Fox RP23 with pro pedal)
Rear mech and shifters Sram XO. Front mech Shimano XT
    Wheels Mavic Crosstrail disc
Brakes Hope Mono M4 floating rotors.
    Chainset Shimano XTR
Seatpost Thomson Elite, Stem Thomson Elite
    Handlebars Specialised Carbon 20mm riser
Saddle whatever comes on the new bike, I’m keeping my Fizik Gobi
    Pedals Crank Bros Candy 2
Tires Panaracer FireXC Pro UST tubeless
Much of the upgraded kit is no more than a year old.
So I was thinking it might still be worth £500.
Yes I know I could break it up for parts!
Any suggestions sensible or stupid welcomed

Yup £500 about right I reckon

As long as everything works and condition is reasonable, £500 seems fair.

TBh I don’t even think its worth that.
Given that this 2010 that went for £500 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Specialized-Stumpjumper-Comp-Fsr-/151540983236?pt=UK_Bikes_GL&hash=item23488be5c4

I recently sold a recently traded in one of the same age with bog standard spec for £350 so £500ish is about right.

I reckon you would still get that on parts and probably more on EBAY

    Seems fair

People are asking £650 to £800 on eBay for similar bikes without upgrades but I think this is seriously wishful thinking, I was worrying £500 was too high (even though I spent at least that on it only a year ago, ho hum)

what does your mate think it’s worth ?

What people are asking for, and what people are getting are entirely different things. You’d be best to do a search for completed listings. You often see that bikes with a low start price attract the best final price, commonly above a higher start price that gets no bids.

Certainly agree with that. Everything I ever sell starts at 99p with no reserve. High starting prices are a great way to no sell stuff.

Back to my mate I don’t think he would have a clue. He has a really old marin bike and doesn’t get out biking much. Whenever he needs to know something about bikes he just asks me!

That bike is 2007 or earlier.

Wait a minute if that went for £500 then mine is worth loads more! I didn’t bother to click on the link…

£500 would be a good mates rates kinda price. If I was new to mtb this would be a great starter bike

That eBay link points to a 2007 or earlier.

I’d agree with £500 if it is in working order and has a decent fork (you don’t say what it is), but only if you take the tyres off. It is probably worth more without them on. 😉

Forks came with bike: Fox 120 RLC. I like the tyres! They seem to go round in a very tyrey sort of a way. Tubeless setup was really easy, they never get pinch flats and hardly lose any air even if I don’t ride for weeks. The new bike has far more fancy Schwalbe tyres which will probably be shit…

It’s a 2007 Comp, in original spec. OP’s should be worth more assuming it’s in good condition.

The bike on Ebay hasn’t sold, it’s been relisted.

Can I play devils advocate ❓
It’s an old bike with lots of shiny “newish” parts on it. The parts may be worth some money but the frame is v-old. I would rather look for a newer frame with less bling parts 💡
So, if said mate knows nothing about bike he is getting a lot of shiny parts and a well used frame, the bit he should be looking at 💡
I’ve just given my son my old Kona, 2005 vintage, rather than try and sell it. Work mate has just punted his 2010 Trek EX8 for £450 just to get rid as fast as possible.

Take all the bling off, fit original or value/2nd hand parts and shift at a realistic price imo..

I recently sold THIS for £480. I wasn’t inundated with enquiries but the guy who wanted it, wanted it.

Yours is a better spec so as long as it’s in good condition I’d say £500 is perfectly fair to a mate.

It’s a 7 year old frame (it’ll still trundle on for years baring a smash) with some ‘newish’ shiny parts, an up to date equivalent would would be a good couple of grand+… for £500 anywhere else you’ll not be getting that spec X0/XT/XTR Drive, Hope brakes, Thompson post/carbon bars, etc on a newer frame/fork with bigger headtubes or bigger wheels IMO… it’s not a bad deal.

ebay prices as a guide are terrible these days, people bid silly money because they get caught up in the bidding and don’t know the actual value of stuff…

The OP’s mate potentially has a bit more “Comeback” buying from a mate than a stranger on ebay, so you could say there’s some value for the buyer too.

£500 is a fair price IMO, I’d not quibble too much over a counter offer £475-450 though if it saved you ebay/classified nonsense, fees and/or postage faff…

I expect (although hope not) that the frame (it’s in excellent condition by the way) will probably last longer than the shiny new carbon fibre one I’ll be taking delivery of…

I certainly cba removing parts and replacing them with crapper ones, especially since the old bits are long ebayed anyway. Removing the parts and selling them on is a realistic option though.
    Seatpost and stem £20 each
    Brakes £40??
    XTR M970 triple crankset – £80-100
    Wheels £100
    Frame and shock £150
    Mech £30
    Shifters £30
    Carbon riser bars £45
These are all complete guesses. Not sure it’s worth it for the hassle.
I think eBay with no reserve and 99p starting price is the way to go. Avoid feeling bad if things go wrong and I sold it to a friend, and I don’t really mind what it goes for. That or keep it in case my carbon fibre bike breaks…

Ebay – no reserve. Then if the auction starts to look like your only going to get £200, get a mate to quickly bid and keep the selling price reasonable. Or he ends up buying it.

Bl**dy flipping c**k. Looks like I’ll be keeping my old bike for a while. On Monday my Norco was about to arrive and going to be delivered in a few days, now the estimated date is 11th March!! Completely can’t decide whether to cancel the order altogether and start looking again or what the **** to do. Either way the trusty Specialised is staying around for now. Nothing like getting excited about a new toy only for hopes to be dashed!

Keep using it through the winter and wait IMO (less chance of ruining that lovely carbon frame before the Summer) 🙂
