Had to take our dog Eddie to the hospital last night with what stated out as a bit of a limp at around 4pm but got a lot worse quickly. MRI this morning showed a slipped disc. Operating on him now. Prognosis is meant to be good but much worry here. Using stw as a distraction when i really should be working.

Any nice stories about recovery or cool photos of your dogs would be appreciated. Thanks.

One of my Border Collies collapsed when we were out for a walk back at easter and was instantly paralyzed from the midpoint of her spine back, losing all funsction in her rear end.

Following a frantic weekend and neurological exam by a specialist as Glasgow Vet School she was diagnosed with an FCE on/in her spinal cord. After some bed rest the dog was walking within a week albeit on 3 legs.

After several months of physio and using an underwater treadmill every other week, she now has full function of 3 legs and basic function in the other. I would recommend following the operation up with this if it is available to you.

At the time all we could rely on was it being an FCE as the dog was uninsured but she came around pretty quickly from bed rest which was pretty lucky, although it did involve a hands on effort to get her to do the toilet initially after loosing all function in the rear end.

Blimey, good to hear that she made a recovery. Had to google FCE.

We’re thankfully insured up to 4k I think, but it looks like there’ll be another few hundred on top of that for the MRI and the op. They seem good and have mentioned courses of physio and hydrotherapy, we’ll be doing as we’re instructed. Not sure Eddie will appreciate hydrotherapy, he doesn’t even like getting his paws wet!

Just waiting for a call to see how the op went 😕

I had a dog who wasn’t much into swimming until she had mobility problems and couldn’t walk far. Once she’d got used to the hydrotherapy she loved it. In her case it was a small swimming pool with an underwater jet at one end – the dog swims towards the jet which keeps them in one place.
