We’ve always used petplan since we had him and thankfully he was covered when breaking a toe and subsequently having it lopped off at 9 months old.
Hes now 3 and a bit, healthy and never been for any other vet visits. However they’ve decided to bump up his insurance by 60 quid a year for no justifiable reason. I appreciate petplan seems to be deemed the best one out there but there must be others available that are good.

My Springer is with Direct Line. I don’t think their cover is as well thought of as Pet Plan but they paid up very quickly for 1.8k of dental work when she broke a tooth. Premium has gone up, but that’s only to be expected.

Yes, doggy root canal is expensive!

I was quoted £40 a month by pet plan and decided I’d be better putting that money in a pot. I figure it beats dealing with an insurance company and all their loopholes.

    Petplan.
Rough calc of about £4K spent in premiums so far on our 9yr old Springer x Lab.

He’s got heart problems, collapsed discs & arthritis in most leg/hip joints so has plenty of drugs & x rays, mri/xt scams in his time plus a few operations to retrieve a nappy he found in the woods & ate, that sort of thing.

Even when you take the £90 per condition excess we pay on top of the above premium costs, in 2017 alone they paid out £3500 without a problem. Overall we’ve had payments of far more than we’ve given them & he was actually pretty healthy & accident free for the first 4-5 years of his life, it’s the last few that have cost a fortune. Canine Cardiology specialists charge a lot…

Yes, our dog isn’t a great example and the whole ‘insure or not’ argument is done on here regularly but as a whole PetPlan are generally regarded as one of the best if you actually need to claim and hope to get something from them.

Here’s hoping you don’t need to see a vet anytime soon!

FWIW I use petplan and I’ve not had a single issue with them. Other than the excess I don’t even pay upfront and I’ve claime getting on for 10k (ongoing). Yeah they’re not cheap but I can vouch for them being really good (IME)

I’ve used Tesco for years now, they were very easy to deal with when we had to claim.

We ditched morethan for petplan. An expensive move on a dog >7 years old but the morethan premiums were just going up and up without us actually claiming.

    OH is a vet

Only pets we don’t insure are the rabbits. Our male cat has been the biggest spender (blocked bladder) until the dog had to go for an MRI this year due to back problems…

Agria here. Not the cheapest but had to claim twice in the first year and it was an easy experience

I was with argos who were brilliant. Two claims, one major(£2500), one minor(£400). Then the dog got older, the renewals got higher and the clause was you couldn’t claim for recurring problems or the same limb. I felt I had to quit, which for the last 3 years has been trouble free. What i paid and was happy to do for the time i did, far outweighed the operation cost after her accident.
