Off to see the Foals tomorrow in Manchester. Looking for a nice bar with good food and real ales with a chilled atmosphere. Open to other areas off Oxford road.

    cheers

I believe binbins does a lot of socialising around Didsbury so he’ll suggest somewhere soon. 🙂

I’d head for West Didsbury as the centre of Didsbury is now a wasteland of Pitcher and Piano’s and Cafe Rouge. Its bloody awful!

The Met was my usual port of call. But you’ve got a few good places around there on Burton Road

Or if you’re heading onto Oxford Road, then you’ve got Kro Bar, The Deaf Institute or Oddest

The met is full of pretentious ****. The station across the road is better but is probably full of the overflow

nbt – Its Didsbury FFS! The whole place is chock-full of pretentious ****s!! That’s its raison d’etre. And the last time I went there was before the BBC colonised the place, so christ only knows what its like now. Its probably like an outreach project from Primrose Hill, charging London prices for cous cous salads

If it was me I’d just head straight to Oxford road and go somewhere decent thats not full of utter strokers.

Or if you don’t want to spend all day in town, then go to the Peoples Republic of Chorlton first. And go for a pie at Pi

Excellent. I was a student in Manchester 10 years ago I had a feeling the centre of Didsbury would be like that now (if it wasn’t then!)

Binners, pretentious is not what we are looking for at all. Chilled is the flavour of the day. Oxford road? The gig is at the Academy, any thoughts round there?

Sand Bar, close to the Universities, so close to the gig, and fits your need for being chilled. Serve good food and ale too.

It is opposite Trof which is also know as the Deaf Institute which is worth a look too.

I was in the Met the other week, used to quite like the place but its a soulless place now, some much more interesting places just up the road. still didn’t feel at home till I got back to the republic of chorlton 😉

Sand bar can attract too many crustie’s for it to be chilled imo – could always try big hands which is almost next door – will be busy but it’s big. Too busy could always head trof/deaf institute

Like I said Hammy… Kro Bar, The Deaf Institute, Oddest or, as spacey suggested.. Sand Bar are all great. All do good beers and good food. You basically can’t go wrong round there. Do a tour of the lot 😀

For the authentic look just get some tinnie’s & sit in whitworth park. Just look out for crazy bus lady – do not get caught in conversation or look her in the eye…

Exactly what binners says. I live in west Didsbury, there are plenty of bars down Burton Road, folk, violet hour, drawing roome etc. And Didsbury Village is gash nowadays.

You know that irony meter I built?
I just heard a very loud bang. 😀

Anywhere on Oxford Road is fine, but obey the Kwik-Fit rule and avoid anywhere with a deliberately misspelt name.
    Usually full of knobbers.

The Lass O’Gowrie is just down the road, on Charles Street, next to the old BBC building.
A proper pub with a microbrewery, strange smells and old men scattered randomly in the corners.

See what I did there 😉

The Fletcher Moss in Didsbury Village was a great pub but even that has gone shite now 🙁

So in summary, I have nothing to add.

kro bar is fine and almost exactly opposite the academy. or yeah, sand bar slightly further down towards the city. and the deaf institute is almost opposite sand bar… no need to head up as far as didsbury (i used to live on central rd, just off burton rd in the middle of west didsbury. all the bars/pubs around there are rammed full of bulbs)…

Thanks again guys, Deaf Institute looks perfect. I used to love the original Trof bar just round the corner from where we lived in Fallowfield.

    Can’t wait now. 😀

The Lass has the best ales around that area.
