My ankle is a right wrongun at the moment

Sharp stabbing / shooting pains around the base of the heel / achilies tendon, going up towards my calf. Much worse after resting (sitting / sleeping). If i walk around, the pain will eventually subside and then if I carry on walking, come back. This morning I cycled (gently) to station, sat on train, walked from train to street in london and cycled to the office. Total 3 miles cycling, all gentle, arriving at 7:45. Normal walking round office (coffee / porcelain posturing, etc). Ankle still hurts 3 hours later.

Went to docs 5 weeks ago, she says probably a tear in the tendon, rest and come back in 4 weeks if no change. Well, it has changed. It’s now worse than it was 🙁

So, I’m attempting to get another appointment, but I’m somewhat sceptical as to what they’ll actually be able to do to fix this.

Obviously, my ankle is infected with cat aids and needs amputating, but what might be an alternative way of healing this?

Over to the STW Medical Corps for diagnosis, treatment plans and general insults!

    Sounds like

Pain and stiffness at the bottom of the heel are common symptoms of plantar fasciitis. The pain may be sharp or dull and is generally the worst first thing in the morning. Climbing stairs and spending a long time standing are also painful and can be accompanied by swelling, redness or tenderness of the heel. Pain may develop quickly after the start of an activity or take longer to develop.

    Don’t think it’s plantar fasciitis

It’ll not be plantar fascitis if it goes up the back of the calf…. Could well be achilles tendonitis. 4 weeks to settle is a touch optimistic.

    Could well be achilles tendonitis

    No it couldn’t.

Might be achilles tendinopathy though. 😉

My money would be on a paratendinopathy in one of the smaller tendons which run beside your ankle.

    GP says tendonitis

He’s arranging some physic and has said I can keep riding, just don’t mash the pedals and take it easy up hills

He also said it could take quite a long time to sort itself out 😐

It’s not achilles tendonitis as there is no such thing. Tendonitis is an inflammatory condition. Achilles tendinopathy is a collagen disruption/disarray based condition.

    physic?

Hope you mean physio otherwise the NHS really has gone down the drain 😉

Yes you really need to see a specialist so it’s good you’ve got a referral – GPs aren’t the best people to ask when it comes to specialised stuff.

As for taking a long time – we’ve all been there. Stuff can take months/years to fix, chin up.

‘cos it starts next month and I’m crock’d

Badminton can be bad for the knees / ankles at the best of times. last played 6 weeks ago and it felt like someone had stabbed me in the heel.

I’d be giving it a go and seeing what happens. You never know it might be better by then.
