Going to put some in front of the mancave as there is around an 18″ step up due to the sloping ground. Size wise – 4.2 wide x 2.4 deep. Had conflicting advice (just like on here :-)) on how many posts and what the joist centres should be.
The mancave is around 3m wide and a 4x2x4.2m joist will bolt to the supporting legs for the mancave leaving an overlap each side. I will then fix joist hangers and run out 2.4m. Using 4×4 posts for the outer frame and also supporting the joists.
One guy saying joists at around 450mm centres and the posts around 900mm apart and stagger them. Would work out to 3 posts per run at aound 800mm centres but looks like a good solution?
The other guy says thats too many and not needed?
    Any thoughts?
Could I use 6×2 @ 600mm centres? Works out the same cost in timber but less post holes so would save some dosh that way.
At the end on the day I dont want a bodge job but something that’s solid enough without being over built.
    TIA

Is the shed sitting on the decking? If so I’d want more, if not I’d go for the smaller centres as a bouncy deck just feels rubbish.

A friend of mine has quite a high deck and the centres are quite far apart, maybe even ore than 900mm and I wouldn’t want to be on it with many other adults.

Go for 450 centres, joists aren’t that expensive, compared to the decking itself, so don’t scrimp on them. Use spax decking screws, and treat with liberon decking oil when done.

How much will you actually save? Probably the square-root of bugger-all. Go with more, not less.

Be sure to seal it properly, this Kiwi chap has some good pointers for that.

Joists, pah. The decking in our garden was laid onto an arrangement of wooden pallets. Solid as a rock. On a trampoline. In a swamp…

Cheers. Just had another working out of quantities, staying with 450mm for the joists and slightly fewer posts.where’s the best place for the decking oil?
