    So, here’s my question – what will happen if I use a non-disc rim (mavic x517) with a disc brake (160mm) on the rear. Will the world end? Will I fail and die? Or will nothing happen? I’m quite light and not very extreme…

    absolutely nothing you can use any rim brake rim (within reason) with a disc hub it just doesn’t work the other way using a disc rim for rim brakes (no braking surface) plus Mavic x517 loverly rims easy to build last for ages of day in day xc use

    use 517/717 rims with braking surfaces on two of my (disk) bikes.

    A classic xc rim.
