Indoor climbing an extreme sport now?…Well s'pose you might forget to tie in (like you might forget to look before stepping out infront of a bus..)
Outdoor climbing? Sport climbing and bouldering no; soloing and ground-up new routing very definately yes.
The current prefered method of cheating on dangerous routes is called Headpointing (pre-practice on a top rope)? It depends on the likelyhood of someone else improving on your style of ascent IMO.

@chickenman – Anecdotal but took a friend climbing outdoors for the first time a few years ago, he paired off with another mate who was leading and about 25 feet up (admittedly only a VDiff) when the newbie shouted over to ask me what he was supposed to do with the other end of the rope. Needless to say we got him on belay very quickly but very quietly!
