    Could you file away some of the lumps inside the cage which the limit screws touch to make it work on eight speed,or would it work anyway? I’ve seen a nice shiny new one somewhere which would look nice on my road/touring bike,as well as letting me use a 32 or 34 cog,and was wondering.

    should work anyway IIRC – limit screws allow it to cope w/8 speed

    Seems a shame really, as those mechs were brutal works of art.
    Cable pull might be a bit odd as pre-8 speed and then post 2000 mechs changed.

    I’m sure I ran my Campag Centaur mtb mech on a (prototype) Campag 8sp cassette. Same for Shimano, you can use a 7sp mech on an 8sp cassette IIRC. The cable pull is certainly the same, just one extra sprocket.
