I need to get a commuting bike. I've decided I need one that takes 32mm tyres, has drop handlebars, so I'm veering towards a cycle cross bike. I need to be able to go off kerbs and along canal towpaths, hence why I've decided 32 mm are needed.

I'm not going to use this bike at all for cyclocross racing so I'm thinking if disc brakes, but are mechanical/cable discs worth it? When they first appeared on moutain bikes V-brakes seemed as good.

Also will a ridgid fork turn to jelly if it has a disc on it? I like the look of the Specialised tricross, I'm against an uncle John as I can't demo one anywhere, or can I ?

Budget a grand max. I would like the possibility of mudguards and front and rear panniers at some point.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

    Matthew
