  • Cod or Haddock

As I sit here tucking into my Friday fish and chips* and swigging hipster IPA I wonder whether there is an officially approved choice of fish here @STW. So – cod, haddock, something else or never?

*Fried in Paris, but by someone who has a vague idea what they are doing. It’s passable.

Who cares, it’s probably mislabeled Vietnamese catfish anyway 😀

Haddock – though bongo is likely correct

I used to always say cod (tail end) but I had cod in Keswick at the weekend but everyone else had haddock and it was much, much nicer.

    Daddy or chips?*

    * As opposed to Daddy or Chipps which gives it whole sinister undertones.

I like Rock or Huss or Dogfish or what ever it’s called these days.

Surely the correct STW answer is sustainable cod line-caught in the The Norway NE Arctic offshore cod fishery, and fried in extra virgin olive oil?

    This.

But if I had to choose between the two, it would be Haddock (Scots genes so also yes to salt ‘n’ sauce).

Just picked up some of both; fresh from Billingsgate this morning, so was swimming around until yesterday!

Both equally nice; Haddock better if fried in my opinion. Cod nicer if steamed or poached.

Halibut is nicer than both though (no really good fresh Halibut today sadly 🙁 ).

and fried in extra virgin olive oil?

Any fule kno it’s rapeseed oil for deep frying. Poncey hipster fail, Binners.

I believe you now have to provide lunch for us all from a local bakery chain.

Neither, hake or the sustainable alternative for me. I’m not normally an eco-bellend about stuff, although I do try to be green, but sustainable fish is where it’s at.

Sorry Binners and sandwich, as the son of a former fish and chip shop owner I can tell you categorically that it must be fried in beef dripping, anyone who says otherwise is talking out of their bottom!

    well the label said hake

the fish was ok, the batter was shocking

Cod, but this place has deteriorating standards ! should really be discussing what craft beer to use in the batter.

Haddock then cod. Hake also works well for fish and chips – nice texture and more taste than cod.

Haddock first choice, cod second followed by pollock. Can’t stand that River Cobbker crap.

Other half says Haddock as Cod is a dirty, filthy fish that lives in shallower waters.

I think she’s just codist and both are equally tasty.
