You are right though, Motorway/Dual Carriageway/Major Roads run off/filter off/on are way too short here, way too short.

What, in the UK? All of them?

Most of them by me are enormous. Except that one in Newport, I think it’s J27. That should be removed, it’s shocking.

2 lanes? You must live in the south. 2 lanes would be lovely.

Newent junction off the M50 is always good for a laugh.

50m of slip road into 180degree hairpin 😀

Watch those Russian dashcam videos to see badly-designed roads.

The WHO map would at a brief glance seem to put us as the second safest place to drive in the world, fractionally behind Sweden.

So yes, it would appear it is worth all the bother

I’ve come to the conclusion that I agree.

The cost in relation to any specific resulting criminal charges still seems high but the wider benefits outweigh that.

    Ey, da Sarf is I.

I’m going up the sodding thing tonight as it happens, all the way to Wetherby, where I’ll turn off onto one of those “B” road things then get all muddy driving along one of those Tractor Country lanes…

It’ll be dark way before I leave, so by the time I reach Cambridge there will be me, 400 trucks (all vying for Porn Bandwidth whilst navigating to the next drop off warehouse) , a farmer, Billy Bob in his SAAB, Trixy in her Pixie Dust Pink Nissan, Alun in his Transit Pickup with two brooms sticking out of the front of the tipper bit….

there’s lots of good work done at the scene but the CPS/Judicial system that then kicks in does not reflect the time and direct/indirect cost of the initial investigation

    Says who?

That’s a good one, though I was going to reply that there are a few dodgy ones on the M50 which molgrips will have driven past even if he’s not used. But the ones on the A40 further down (which is motorway speeds) are possibly even worse – the Goodrich junction I normally get on at coming back from FoD is bad enough https://goo.gl/maps/N1YaR3oXp1m (it’s pretty much floor it from stationary when you see a gap – I haven’t the bottle to keep the speed up round the bend and attempt to merge), but I usually get off the A40 here, which is a 70 limit https://goo.gl/maps/SkhDbxP1abB2 – what slip road?

Most of those I can think of on other motorways are fine though.

Highways england has details of road incidents and what they did for a number of incidents, makes intresting reading.

    http://www.highways.gov.uk/traffic-information/traffic-information-services/highways-england-post-incident-bulletin/

Somebody gets killed /injured seriously, your mum dad sister/brother/partner/freind/workmate, and some motorist stuck for a while or having to divert getS upset, not at the death and suffering but having THEIR SMALL PATHETIC WORLD AND TIMELINE DELAYED FOR THE CLEAR UP/INVESTIGATION TO HAPPEN.

ONE DAY YOULL GET THAT PHONE CALL KNOCK ON THE DOOR TO SAY SOMEONE CLOSE HAS DIED OR IS HOSPITAL HAVING SUFERED LIFE CHANGING INJURIES.

Hopefully youd want it investigated the wrong doer imprisoned or fined, or would you just be happy for the scene to be cleared with a JCB, and a few bollards.

It’s not only about criminal prosecutions either. Understanding the circumstances of a collision like that will be critical to making sure that civil liability is properly allocated. A person was killed; expensive vehicles (and cargo?) were destroyed. How do you make sure that the person’s family and the affected businesses are properly compensated without knowing what happened? That’s people’s lives (can those left behind afford to keep the house, support their kids etc) and livelihoods that you’re dealing with.

A friend of mine was in a near death accident (scene preserved until they got the okay from the hospital), when it came to court the prosecution were able to use evidence previously collated on the junction after a death there, so can be useful in other cases rather than just the case in hand*. Driver in my mates case got 9pts & £2500 fine.

    * you’d hope they’d also use the info to help make road layouts safer too, but in my experience they just lower the speed limits
