  • Clicking driving me mad!
  • jonnytheleyther

I’ve got a Whyte 901 and in the last week or two I’ve got a clicking coming from somewhere near the cranks.

    Pedals seem fine.

I haven’t a clue what it is, BB? Seat post? Saddle? Hub? Chain?

Help me STW, you’re my only hope.

Seat post is always prime suspect – remove, clean, grease

My clicking came from a loose dropout, but sounded like it was from the BB.

Instead of checking random parts, use a methodical approach to narrow it down:

Has it appeared suddenly or gradually getting worse?
    Only when pedalling?
All the time or only under load?
Once per rotation at the same place or not?
Standing as well as (or worse than) seated? If not then not saddle/post.
When riding no handed? (If not then try headset/bars/stem)

OP has my every sympathy… Mine’s got a clunk, you can hear it and feel it on the non-drive side as you pedal, it’s every stoke but effected by load, BUT it’s not at the same point of every stroke.

Even though there was zero play in the BB, it wasn’t spinning well so I changed it, clunk went… for about 3 rides, now it’s back!

Gave up and handed it over to a Pro, I’m inline for a new chain and cassette anyway – which might fix it I suppose – they’re pretty worn it seems. I fear it might be the chainset though, I foolishly rode it once when it wasn’t on tight enough and the arm fell off, it’s never been right since

    What gravity slave said.

Only while seated – probably the seatpost or saddle rails, take them apart and grease everything. Mine’s even been grit in the QR clamp making it feel tighter than it was and allowing the post to creak in the frame.

Only while standing and pedalling – BB, pedal threads or rear QR.

I found 2 5p coins in my pocket was the source of my clicking on commute bike

    Chain ring bolts. Possibly.

I’ll be looking at this properly tomorrow. I think I’ll be a bit worse for wear tomorrow so think taking bits off my bike and riding it round the block to test everything rather than a big ride appeals to me!

I had this and I tried everything to sort it. Eventually worked out it was the zip on my jacket tapping on a bit of my camelbak strap. DOH!

On a more serious note, I had a click under climbing, turned out it was my cassette needed to be torqued up a bit…..running 1×11 and the cassettes need to be tight.
