A few years back when I last had time to bike, I recall there being a lot of love for the “choakley” sunglasses from china, with reports that they were even better than cheap sunglasses from these shores and that there might even be a place for their frames with other lenses… this all seems to have disappeared. what is the current view on decent specs for riding?
I have no prescription and just want some eye protection and maybe some sun protection and obviously the most important thing is to look like I’m trying to be cool!

Having had fakeleys, the thought was always in my mind that my retina were being burned away in some way.
These are pretty cheap and having had a couple of pares, can recommend to quality.

I had a couple of pairs of these and now use Uvex for cheap effective MTB sunglasses. The frame quality was worse on the later pair of Chinese fakes and after very bright, long days my eyelids feel suspiciously tight if I’ve worn them which they don’t for the Uvex.

I understand that there possibly shouldn’t be a difference in UV performance but it certainly feels like the certified units offer more protection. Then there’s the horror stories about the frames if you faceplant hard enough that broken glasses forcing their way through your face might be an issue.

I tried them, wouldn’t go back to them. In the grand scheme of things the real item isn’t expensive compared to eye damage, and there are plenty of 20odd quid choices that look good and are properly certified if you don’t want to spring £100+ for sunglasses (I don’t!)

thank you for the replies, I wasn’t specifically wanting such a design, I just remember back in 2007??? when I last used this board, there was certainly a lot of people rushing for the bandwagon and lots of praise, I assumed they had fell out of favour but it was what the replacement was that interested me or if people had just bought enough to last 100 years so didn’t care.

Aliexpress pretty much stamped out all fakelys, so that killed them off

Ben Swift was wearing some Velochampion Choakleys in the Dauphine last week I noticed. Might get me some, shame they don’t do photochromic ones.

I had some Choaklit Jawbones, and they were fine until I needed to use the replacement nose pieces they came with as the fitted ones broke and discovered that after a lot of faffing they were a load of Chit. The case is still going strong though.

I lost a pair of perfectly good Oakleys by leaving them on the top of my car after getting back to it one evening and then driving off.

So i then had 3 spare lens sets and no frames for them.

The Fakeley frames I bought are still going strong, and I don’t bother unduly that the clear lenses I use in them whenI use clear lenses aren’t genuine, the other ones for sunny days are.
