Changing over to Sky broadband - router question

I am hoping this will be easier than trying to extract a clear answer from Sky...

We are changing from BT broadband to Sky and we have just received a letter telling us to plug in their router (that comes free with the service) but not until after the service changes over to them, they will then perform a series of checks on speed etc.

As I already have broadband and am happy with my Zyxel router, do I need to do anything or should I just log on to the control panel on change-over day if I need to? Basically I can't be arsed unplugging everything and faffing around if I don't need to.

Zyxel Prestige P600 series?
Depending on whether SKY provide you with your service username and password or not, you can reconfigure the router VERY easily.
Im not sure if SKY will give you that info, just give a new router instead?

Just asked a random sample of my team (broadband tech support) and SKY seem to be reluctant in providing the connection login details.
If you have them though, just get in touch.

The username and password used to be buried deep within the Sky router.
And the T&Cs state you must use the supplied router.

sky are arsey about providing that info, but there are sites which will calculate what the values are. Search skyuser.co.uk forums for it.

Ahh brilliant - sounds relatively simple then.

Not sure about the exact model of my router, but it is a Prestige yes.

We changed to Sky Broadband recently. It's simple, you just plug in the Sky router and pop a CD-ROM in the computer for a few minutes. If you want the bother of reconfiguring your old router to run Sky then there are forums that tell you how to 'crack' the Sky router to get your new service password. Apparently Sky are cagey about giving people the info to use other routers as they have plans to provide serivces in the future that need their own routers to function. The speed checks involve leaving your router switched on for a fortnight so they can do their testing.

BTW, our old broadband provider, Pipex, was miles faster. I'll be changing back when our contract's over.

Same thing, I asked for the keys, and they were really not keen, in the end it was easier to use theirs. It's been fine. Missus blew up the power supply on one, and they were happy just to replace the whole lot FOC.

Sorry for hijack but I have just changed from BT to SKy broadband and it is appalling, the signal keeps dropping out. The laptop downstairs seems OK (but slow) but the one upstairs keeps saying "connection timeout". And our iphones struggle to connect to wifi when upstairs. Didn't have any of these problems with the BT router.

I called customer service and they told me to change over the micro filters (I had just re-used the BT ones), but this has made little difference. The also told me to plug the router into my BT master socket as it is probably a fault with the slave phone point which is BS. I am tempted to cancel and go back to BT, but probably cant.

Anyone else having similar issues with SKY broadband. The signal strength seems to vary greatly from full bars to zero?

Well I will soon find out... I guess, under distance selling, I will have the option to cancel my contract if it doesn't work as I expect.

Was with Sky getting 4 meg, switched to 02 and get 9 meg. Both services were LLU.

We switched over from bt to sky just before christmas, just used the new router they sent us, we've had no problems with ours so far (touch wood).

My sky has been pretty faultless TBH, my laptop struggles sometimes upstairs, but that's most likely the laptop rather than the router, as the the iphone and touch can connect anywhere. Pretty good speed, and even pretty "human" customer care line.

@organic - I can't see how wifi connection issues are related to micro-filters or the BT socket, if the devices can't even connect stably to the router then the state of the Internet connection is irrelevant. Have you got a wired connection as well to test the Internet connection from?
