  • Chainstay/chainring clearance – how little is too little?

I picked up one of those Titus El Chulo frames from Planet X over Christmas – the ones with the manufacturing cock up where the chainstay doesn’t taper in properly towards the BB shell. The frame blurb says a 28T chainring will work fine. In my infinite wisdom, I then ordered a 30T chainring thinking “och it’ll be fine”. And it is fine… But only by the width of a midge’s pube. See pics below.

The chainring spins freely, but wondering if it’s just too close – I’m not sure how much frame deflection there would be in this area. Anyone got any experience doing something similar? Should I return the 30t and learn not to be a smart arse (I won’t)?

Rear triangle will flex and that looks pretty darn close. I had similar clearance with a 38t on my solaris (which did contact stay on hard stomping) …but chucked another spacer between bb threaded shell which pushed chainring out a bit. Been running for ages now and all good.

Why not add another spacer to the BB if you are concerned.
If will effect your chainlike but difficult to know whether for the better or worse !

    Edit: beaten to it grrrr

Hmm, sometimes the simplest of solutions are the easiest eh!

I reckon 1mm-1.5mm more should do the trick. I’m presuming of course that they can be bought in 0.5mm increments.
